GP2 Modem Play help needed

by Paul Sobejk » Tue, 09 Sep 1997 04:00:00

I'm trying to link up with my friend's computer.  We both have 33.6k USR
sportsters.  The game connects at 28800, but it is dog slow.  Is that
supposed to happen, or are we doing something wrong ?  It is unplayable
at that speed.  I have a p60 and he's got a p166mmx.  My frame rate when
playing alone is a 23.2 fps (i have most of the detail turned off).  We
both run it in VGA mode, so the graphic issue should not be a concern.
Is the game really unplayable over the modem ?  Indycar never had this
problem, and it was connecting at 9600!

If anyone has played the game over the modem with acceptable frame rate,
please let me know how you've done it.

Thank You,

Paul Sobejko

You need to turn off error correction and data compression on your modem:
&K0 &M0.(for most USR modems).
Set com port to 19200. If your com port has 16550 UARTs type: gp2 use16550
to start the game.
This is the best setup I have found. The game is still slower than off line
but very little or no pausing.
My suggestion is to buy a null modem cable. This works a lot better/faster
and the game is actually playable/enjoyable. Have fun.

I did use the &k0 &m0 string.  The baud rate was 38400, and I used the 16550 command line switch.  I tried the game with the
frame rate set at 13fps and it is better, but it's still unplayable relative to stand-alone game.  Can you tell me what frame
rate are  you using, and if you are having trouble steering/braking due to the loss of control when frame rate is too low ?

thanks for all  your help,

Paul S.
