Nascar2: Modem racing and Entry Lists??

by Hen » Sun, 29 Dec 1996 04:00:00

Anyone,

Would you care to tell me how the hell should I set up my modem
entry list so that both caller and answerer drive their own
paintjobs and own car numbers??!
Last night we did some experimenting and couldn't do it.
The answerer always has the correct paintjobs (ie. he drives
his own car and the modem partner has his) but the caller either
has car numbers the same for both cars, names the same or he
drivers the other guy's car and vice versa ... It's Nascar1
all over again ... <sigh>

Also, is it possible to use an entry list _other_ than MULTI?
Of course I can rebuild a new list by that name, but since
dialer and answerer must have different lists ...

You need two lists. Call one ANSWER.LST and one CALLER.LST. Depending on
which you're doing (answering or calling). Create two files in the CARS
directory... call one T_PLAYER.CAR and one OPPONENT.CAR. Now, in your
ANSWER.LST make T_PLAYER.CAR the first position and OPPONENT.CAR the
second position. In CALLER.LST make OPPONENT.CAR the first position
and T_PLAYER.CAR the second. All other cars in the list should be in the
same order for each file.

The difference in ANSWER.LST and CALLER.LST is that the first two entries
are swapped around. Just the first two. This makes it easy to manage
dial-up racing and get the correct players in the correct cars. However,
you gotta know who's calling who and copy which ever list into MULTI.LST.

CALLING SOMEONE:

If I'm dialing, then I copy my CALLER.LST into MULTI.LST, and copy my
modem racing buddy into OPPONENT.CAR (assuming I've already put my car
into T_PLAYER.CAR). Then, go into the game, go to the Driver Info, take
your modem racing buddy's car, and change the name to be YOU. Yep, you'll
show up in the car list twice... but the game apparently is screwed for
the caller. It looks stupid, but it'll work fine.

The caller's CAR is pulled from the second slot in the list while the
caller's NAME is pulled from the first slot. Dumb. Just make the caller's
name be in the first and second slot and it'll be fine.

ANSWERING SOMEONE:

Same issues with the T_PLAYER.CAR and OPPONENT.CAR. Make sure you copy the
right cars into the right names. Then, copy ANSWER.LST into MULTI.LST.
Done. For the answerer it's correct from the get-go.

Sounds complicated. Once you try it out a few times you'll see it's really
easy... plus, you'll be able to swap modem racing buddies around REAL EASY
compared to creating multiple lists for each one.

---snip---

Thanks, I was having the same problem racing my brother over our network.
This seems needlessly complicated.  How in the hell do you get the lists
right for an 8 player network?

Especially when you consider that in N2-multi, you can only
use multi.lst.  The file must be this in order to work (AFAIK),
so the best I've found is to create 2 lists + the multi:

  multi.cal     (John Smith 1st, My name 2nd)
  multi.ans    (My name 1st, John Smith 2nd)
  multi.lst      (Result from using the batch files below)

Then create 2 batch files in the N2 dir thus:

CALL.BAT
===============
CD CARS
DEL MULTI.LST
COPY MULTI.CAL MULTI.LST
CD..
RENDDMA.BAT
===============

ANSWER.BAT
===============
CD CARS
DEL MULTI.LST
COPY MULTI.ANS MULTI.LST
CD..
RENDDMA.BAT
===============

In both case the call and answer lists remain intact, so prior to
hooking-up simply type either 'CALL' or 'ANSWER' at the N2-
DOS prompt.  :)

(I use renddma instead of nasrend because I have renddma.bat do
a few other things prior to running, but you could substitute the line
RENDDMA.BAT to NASREND.EXE -DMA.)

Other than the above, I used basically the same format as you.  :)

Best Regards,

Marc
