GPL "Real" Replay site...

by Ryan Murra » Thu, 07 Jan 1999 04:00:00

Hi, well I have noticed that there is a need for a replay site out there
that specializes in not crashes, but the other aspect of the game, racing. I
would think this kind of site would be great, and fun to helm. I know of a
server out there that is reliable and gives PERL, CGI, and 20 megs of space
for free. I am thinking about doing this, it seems fun.

The only problem would be getting the replays to me, now I don't know how
large an "average" one is, but if they are too large then I doubt I will be
able to do it. I am experienced in making sites....

what the hell, I will do it  :)

It seems fun...I love GPL...

I guess you can look for the "Replay Palace" soon...

A one lap replay is around 300kb and can be zipped down to around
130-150kb.  This is for the avg. 1-2 minute replay... The 'Ring would
be around 1MB or so before being zipped...

I would guess e-mail would be the way to get replays to you, but you
may want to see if you can get some sort of laternate e-mail address
since you could easily get bombarded by a bunch of people sending
150-200kb attachments at once!  If you could come up with a public FTP
directory that would have write permission (with a specified limit) we
could upload replays trhough FTP, and you could sift through them to
get out the bogus files.  I used to use an ISP that allowed anonymous
logins to their FTP site and had a PUBLIC directory that they would
let anyone upload to, and they just had the directory purge itself
every night to kepp from bulking up too much...

The problem may be space. Most replays currently are "hotlaps", so
only one car. As you add more cars the replay size increases linearly
so the files will be quite big. However, the advantage is that we will
rarely need a full lap, perhaps only a couple of corners and a few
seconds.

Another issue is that in a hotlap the tendency is toward smooth or
perfect driving, whereas in a race situation people will lock up
tyres, clip grass or whatever - these effects increase the replay size
significantly. What could be done though is use the special replay
compression program to reduce fps by 50% and so half the replay size
(or even more).

It would be a nice idea though - I'd far rather see a good racing
battle than watch yet another crash replay.

Great, keep us posted on progress so we can all save our greatest
moements!

Cheers!
John
