GPL: "Can't Initialize Replay System" - Help!!!!!!

by Chris Help » Mon, 16 Jul 2001 11:37:05

Hi All,

GPL will launch, but when I try to go to a track, I get the message "Can't
Initialize Replay System", followed by "Cancelling Weekend". My system is a
1.3GHz Pentium 4, GeForce 2 GTS 32MB, 768MB of RAM, 60G HD,  Soundblaster
Live, Logitech Wingman, CH Pro Pedals; running Windows Me.

GPL had been working perfectly on this system, and then suddenly began to
display this symptom. I had installed Win2k as a dual-boot OS, and installed
the new 12.41 Detonator drivers, and I am not sure whether I had run GPL
between either of those installs and the appearance of this problem.

The problem occurs whether I run in S/W mode or D3D mode.

I have tried everything to fix this - reinstalling GPL, deleting the old GPL
directory (after uninstalling) and then reinstalling, reinstalling Windows
Me; then removing Windows Me, installing Boot Magic, creating a new primary
partition, installing Win Me on that separate partition (so that Win Me and
Win2k can't see each other). Same problem.

I just reformatted the Win Me partition, reinstalled Me (again!) and
installed GPL without installing anything but my basic sound, video and
Wingman drivers. Running the original unpatched version of GPL in S/W mode,
I get the same problem.

Heeeeeeellllllppp!!!!

Thanks,
Chris

I forgot to add that I could play Super 1 Karting, and other non-sim games,
with no problems, seems to be just GPL. I don't think it can be related to
the GeForce driver or the GPL D3D patch, because the problem also occurs in
software mode.

Thanks,

I dont have the solution, but I had the exact same problem earlier today.
But I "cured" it with a reboot. The problem here I think was because I had
several programs running in the background. (3 IE browser windows, Outlook,
and Adobe Photoshop). I wanted to check a replay but got the same message as
you did. Before the message popped up I had a lot, and I mean lot of
harddisk activity. Probably swap. It took more than twice the time as
normally before anything happend.

I think the reason it happend here was lack of free memory or something ?

Can Windows ME deal with 768Mb ram ??
Have you tried running GPL under Win 2000 ?

<< The problem here I think was because I had

The only software I even have installed, apart from Win Me and some drivers,
is GPL and the Wingman profiler. I tried it with no other programs running,
no dice.

<< Can Windows ME deal with 768Mb ram ??

I'm guessing Me can, because my other games ran OK, but I don't know about
GPL.

I was also wondering if the RAM could be the problem. I can't remember if I
ever ran GPL after I installed that extra memory.  I just checked and found
that the game-installed replays will play back just fine - so since the the
problem message is related to the replay system, I think you may have hit
the nail on the head. The replay system does make heavy use of the RAM  - I
remember there is some parameter which can be set in core.ini to increase
the RAM used by the replay recording - perhaps that would help.

<< Have you tried running GPL under Win 2000 ?
I could try that ...

Do you (or anyone) know of a way to contact Papy about this?

Thanks,
Chris

I think it all comes down to 768Mb memory you have installed ?

The parameter to set the amount of memory GPL can use is this :

[ Replay ]
ReplayMemoryOverride = xxxxx

Multiply the amount of memory you will use with 1024, and instert that
number instead of xxxxx
Ex. 85x1024 = 87040 (The amount I use)

GPL: "Can't Initialize Replay System" - Help!!!!!!

Hmmm...perhaps GPL will try to use the amount specified in the core.ini
(memoryoverride thing), or if nothing is defined try to use what ever there
is ?
If nothing is defined, 768Mb maybe a notch to much for GPL to handle ??
So if this is true, adding the memory override line in your core.ini should
cure it...(fingers crossed ;)

[ Replay ]
ReplayMemoryOverride = 87040

yup  I have heard that too before.  YOU HAVE TOO MUCH MEMORY INSTALLED TO
RUN GPL.
I'm not 100% sure of the cure, but I beleive the best way is to create a big
mother of a ram disk that eats up enough memory to get your system specs
under 512k.

768MB of RAM is too much for Windows 9x/Me to handle. Use msconfig.exe
to limit the amount of memory below 512MB.

GPL: "Can't Initialize Replay System" - Help!!!!!!

Chris...

As some others have suggested, you have too much memory installed for
Windows.

You can do several things (hold shift key down while you reboot).....to
solve the problem with GPL replay initializing.  But, you'll still have
several miscellaneous problems with Windows opts (like you'll never have
enough video memory, so playing more than one or two videos will crash your
system).

The best thing to do is remove one of your 256 mb sticks of RAM, reboot and
everything will be cool.  This is a known problem at MS with Windows 9x.
You can refer to the MS KB "article ID: Q253912" ....if you don't believe
me.

Tom, and others:

Thanks for all the info.

I checked out article Q253912, which describes symptoms not exactly like
mine, but it does seem to refer to the same basic problem. There are a
couple of solutions in the article, which I will try. Unfortunately some of
my work apps use more than 512k under Win2000 (dual-booted), so removing the
physical memory will have to be a last resort.

<< hold shift key down while you reboot
What does this do?

Thanks,
Chris

Hi Tom,

I just used the Win Me system configuration tool (msconfig) to limit memory
used to 512MB, and that did the trick. Thanks for your help!

GPL: "Can't Initialize Replay System" - Help!!!!!!

by Tom Pabs » Tue, 17 Jul 2001 15:14:16

Chris...

I was going to do that too.  But, I realized I didn't killer need to have
the 768 mb of ram....so just took a stick out and used it another computer
that "needed more ram."  That "problem" drove me crazy for nearly two weeks,
until I found the MS-KB on it.

I'm not sure what the "hold shift key down and reboot" actually does (you
can release it as soon as the message appears, "Returning To Windows..."),
but obviously it makes Windows address the memory properly.  I used that
"work around" for two weeks.  Everything on the system worked better when I
did that (usually only to load GPL, though).

My guess is, more and more people will begin running into this......with RAM
so cheap....and "more seeming better!"  You know?

Glad you found a fix......much sooner than I did...for sure!

Regards,

Tom
