I have cable modem behind a Netgear RT314 gateway router.  Why doesn't
N4 show me something in the "Connect Via" box other than the phone
modem????

Run N4.  Go to multiplayer.  Click CONFIGURE.  Check "Find Network Addresses
Another Way".  Restart N4.

Have you checked the "find ip address in another way" box?
