Maybe Papyrus will make it for the clothes iron that Apple stole the iMac
design from too.

Unfortunately for Mac-users no.  Papyrus has killed-off all future
Mac ports.  I don't think you'll be able to use an PC-emulator for
this, as GPL is Win95 and my knowledge of what's allowable from PC
to Mac is a bit thin (check the Mac-forums about Win95-to-Mac use).

Cheers!

Sorry Robo,
Papy has given up on Mac ports for any future sim, it's not worth
their time for the limited sales to Mac owners. I hate to say it, but
the iMac would probably not run GPL anyway, no hardware acceleration and
rather slow to run in software mode. Best of luck, you can still find
some of the older Papy sims of course. All the best, Mike

The shape and colours of the iMac were designed by an Aussie!
(I really am in two minds about telling you this! :o))

Hate to break it to ya Bruce

but ZDTV showed the "European clothes iron" which is the "exact" model for
the iMac, it has the same colors, same translucent plastic, same exact knob
design.   But this shouldn't surprise anyone because Apple stole the
original Lisa design from Xerox PARC.   The Mac faithful will just have to
live with the fact that their new idol is a rip-off of a domestic appliance.

PCers,

> But this shouldn't surprise anyone because Apple stole the

Sorry, that's an urban legend. Apple PAID for the things they adopted from
Xerox. Unlike M$ which either steals or simply swallows their enimies.
Have you _seen_ the original Xerox star? Have you ever _used_ a Lisa? No?
Then shut up.

But back to the original question: There is/was a petition where you could
vote for more racing sims on the mac (http://www.macracing.simplenet.com).
About 1000 or so votes came in, but Papy still refused. On the other hand,
Thrustmaster got annoyed by so much mail (every 100 votes created one 8^).

You have to live with what's there: ICR2 and NASCAR. If apple sells more
items than it has in the past, Papy will no doubt consider porting GPL
because it should be an easy task. Market share is everything.

It would be interesting how GPL performs on a average 300MHz G3 and 3dfx
card under a PC emulator. Since most of the work is done be the graphics
card, the emulation slowdown factor would be less important.

Hmm, how about a linux port? Hardware acceleration, superior networking
performance, rock-stable, no driver conflicts ***ing up your system beyond
recognition, and an estimated 10 million user base until Xmas 1998, among
them many sim fans... I'd jump for a Linux port right away.

Uwe (hoping for a native Linux GPL II ;-)

I'm a bit of a newbie to Linux, but I'll vouch for the stability and
great networking support. It also happens to run on the same
architecture as Win95/98, which means at minimum a new user interface
is required and perhaps a few other tweaks?

One of the guys at MacRacing tried to run GPL on a 604e/200 in emulation using
his 3Dfx card and he said with all graphics off he was getting around 1 frame
every 5 seconds (that's right, 0.2 fps).  Maybe a G3 300+ would be a little
different, but I doubt it.
So it's ICR2 and N1 from Papy only.  But, hopefully if iMac sales are good they
will support the PPC Mac's again, this time using 3Dfx.

How are IMac sales going to help things?  It's slow by today's ***
standards, has an ATI RageIIc chip soldered into the motherboard, and no
expansion slots to add a 3Dfx or any other 3D card.  While the IMac may
look kinda cool, it's certainly not going to convince companies to start
making Mac ports of games.

GPL for Mac?

At the risk of starting another rant, Apple has no one to blame but
themselves.  Since The Beginning Of Computers, Apple has always implied a
sense of superiority over PCs, that their stuff is somehow more
"intellectual."  For example the closed architecture, a perfect case of
"only we are worthy of knowing the insides of the Anointed Machine."  By
keeping their system in-house, the open market simply continued on with the
machine which inspired innovation and low pricing, the PC.

FWIW, I've used both PCs and Macs, so I hold no grudges either way, it's
simply a matter of intelligent marketing.
