GP2 on a P90

Hi.
I've got a Compaq P90. I will putting in a rendition based video card
(for ICR2). Is it at all worth my while to try out GP2? Or will it be far
too slow to be useable on my system.

Also, does anyone have any comparisons of GP2 (which I have never
played), and ICR2 (which I have played a lot of)? I like ICR2 but, of
course, love all the circuits of the F1 world. Yes, I'm salivating over
Racing Legends.

Thanks for any help.

Donavon,

I have ICR2 and GP2 (as well N1+2)and on a P75.  As for GP2, it's very
playable on my machine.  However, I run very few screen eating features
like trackside buidings w/details, etc, but it's no big loss, as the
"basic" SVGA graphics the game supplies is quite nice.  Insofar as
gameplay... well, that's up to the individual.  I've seen GP2 flamed to
the deepest hell, and lauded to the highest heaven.  I fall somewhere in
between.  As for the way the car drives, it can be set up to where it's
similiar to the ICR2 car, but you're going to get some neat features
that ICR2 doesn't have, like pitch and roll.  True, in a "accident"
situation, the airborne antics aren't quite "authentic", but hitting the
rumble strips, or veering off in a gravel pit is.  IMHO, the quality of
racing is good.  As you move up through the field, the better
drivers/cars are extremely challenging, and drive aggressively.  I like
that.  It seems like in N1 & 2, they sort of give up once you pass
them.  The race experience in GP2 is totally different from ICR2.  That
is, there are no full course yellows, only local... and no pace laps,
but a standing start (complete with starting lights).  However both are
correct for F1.  Another thing that you'll notice is that all 26 the
cars are drawn in front of you.  This makes for some neat situations as
you head for turn one.  I've seen cars "up in the pack" climb the wheels
of the car next to them, and bounce accordingly.  Also, the breakdowns
are neat.  Sometimes, I've come upon a smoking car (and the smoke at
times gets so thick it's challenging to see where you're going!) that
developes an oil fire... complete with flames! (BTW *your* car can do
the same if you've got the random breakdowns kicked in.)  In summary,
your machine will handle it (though I don't know about that rendition
card, whether it will actually slow the game).  And as for the racing
sim over ICR2, each represent different worlds, and in that respect they
are worlds apart.  Both are great.  I've not regretted getting GP2. Hope
this helps. (And the menu screen music is kickbutt.)
Feel free to e-mail me with any specific questions you might have.

Yes, if you like F1 of course it is? I used to run gp2 on a 486 DX4 100
and it ran ok.

It is all subjective of course? although I thought it ran ok, someone
else may have thought it ran like a pig?

I used to run it in vga mode, with about half the graphics options off,
and it ran ok at around 21 fps, which for me is smooth enough. It only
became a problem if I wanted to run gp2 in svga mode (which I didn't as
gp2 has great vga graphics!!!!)

PS: I now run gp2 on a K6 200 (clocked to 233) and it absolutely flies.

Donavon,  Iv'e Played GP2 on my Quantex P90 for a Year.   To me It's
worth playing on a P90. I get a decent frame rate with some of the
graphics turned off (sky, grass).  I own a P200MMX now.  GP2  on my new
machine runs great with all of the graphics on exept the sky.  On
certian tracks (starting line of Monaco and San Marino) the game seems a
little slow.  It's not that the computer isn't fast enough, thats just
the way the game is. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Tony

I used to run GP2 on a P90  - as long as you turn plenty of textures off it's OK
No sky, as little as possible in rear view. Select 2fps less than the predicted
fps and all should be OK.

Mind you it's much better on my new P200MMX :))

I had an AMD 5x86 133 which AMD rated with their 'P90' rating. GP2 would
play fine with graphic details shutdown to a low level. 'Fine' being a
relative term... It was playable (and I'm picky) and I think your system
should see comparable results.

One ANNOYING 'complaint' with the game is when qualifying time runs out
your lap is stopped. No Michael Schumacher imitations. You should be
able to complete your last lap IF you pass the start/finish line to
start your lap BEFORE time expires.

Oh wellllll....

IMHO, ICR2 is much better.  It has a true 3D graphics engine, while GP2 (I
presume you mean by Micrprose) seems to be more like a movie that you drive
in. However, I must say, I was quite ***ed to the first one, World
Circuit, before ICR and ICR2 came along.

quite the opposite, IMHO. I never get that feeling of racing with ICR2
what I get with GP2.I am using P90 and must say that I like to drive
them both in VGA mode just because of that feeling of speed. ICR2 is
still lacking that speed even in VGA but GP2 really flies in VGA mode

Hmmmmm...maybe I should reinstall GP2 on my new p200...I do have a lot of
problems on Long Beach with oversteer (that high speed right-hander)...it's
just disabling all the driving help that's a pain.
