Viper Racing aging well

Viper Racing aging well

I hadn't used Viper Racing for a year or more... loaded on my new PC the
other day (Athlon 1.2 with ATI Radeon).  Downloaded the latest patch, and
ran it at 1024x768 with all the visual options set to maximum... in
simulation mode with all the driving aids turned off...

WOW!  This game is still an excellent car simulator!  In fact I still think
it is still the only real car simulator available on the market.  If you are
waiting for WSC, and are getting impatient, I would strongly recommend this
game to hold you over.

I started career mode and forgot how difficult it was to race the stock
Viper with all it's weight, soft suspension and inefficient parts and setup.
You have to drive nice and easy to just finish races to get a few hundred
dollars to upgrade your car.  The physics and simulation are top notch!  I
mean, you really can't just slam on the accelerator or especially the
brakes!  How many car games are there where you actually need to lightly
press on the brakes, like a normal car, to slow the car down?  Not many!
Maybe Formula 1 simulators only.  Even the damage modeling is amazingly
dynamic.

The simulation is realistic, the game is fun and the tracks are really
interesting too...  I don't know why this game never sold that well?  I
guess it's too difficult for all of the NFS arcade type drivers out there...
too bad we'll probably never see a Viper 2.

I wholeheartedly agree with this.  It has about the best shelf life of any
driving game I can think of.  I have probably run through the championship
about 10 times and it is still a great fun challenge every time.  The
driving model is subtle but very good.

I think Viper 2 was called "Nascar Heat", which also seems to be holding up
well on my system.

I really enjoyed Viper and should give it another go. Are you saying
there's a new Viper patch?

There was one official patch released (1.1) but there is also a "fix" on the
net that gives you the possibility to crank up the resolution to 1024x768.
There are also now plenty of car modifications, 3d rim wheels, etc...

It has aged very well indeed, but the original tracks are still all there is
:(

No, sorry, the latest patch (v1.1) is not that new (19 January 1999)... but
it allows me to set the
resolution to 1024x768 where the original did not.

I totally agree. Viper Racing is my favorite racing title by far.
Perhaps the learning curve was too steep for the average gamer to
appreciate.
The AI was very good in career mode, and in the beginning, the on-line
racing was fantastic.
What kind of ruined it for me, was when they brought out a patch, that
allowed you to choose regular, or GTS. It became increasingly
difficult to get good races, where everyone was on the same page,
willing to race the same type of cars.
It still has the best use of force feedback that I've ever
experienced, which is remarkable considering how long ago it was
released.

The game is great...just the tracks aren't that good (only a couple have the
layout that could pass for a real life road course).

In my opinion Viper's force feedback is second only to GPL. I have heard
that N4 has great FF too.

Has anyone managed to get Viper Racing to work with Window's 2000? If so,
could you let me know? I'm starting to go through withdrawl here since I
installed windows 2000 about 2 weeks ago and haven't been able to race :-(

Try creating a shortcut to the main executable file, then on the
property sheet for the shortcut, enable compatibility mode. Set it to
Windows 98. That's what I did and it runs fine in Win2k (SP1). Only
problem I have is choppy audio, but I can live with it. :)

There's probably a better way to do the compatibility setting, but
that's what I did and it worked, so I haven't fiddled with it.

Agreed.  VR & SCGT are two classics that I'll still play from time to time.

Run the attached setwin95.cm on the viper racing exe and hey presto!

Viper must be one of the most underrated games of all time. FF is only
second to GPL and the handling is excellent. Very good fun on LAN.

Sierra's site has the 1.1patch, but I have no idea for the V3 fix.
