Hi all this is an idea that has just been e-mailed to me;

See what you think and pass it on if you agree with it. We are hitting
95p a litre in some areas now, soon we will be faced with paying 1 a
ltr.

Philip Hollsworth offered this good idea:

This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy petrol on a certain day"
campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil companies
just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to hurt
ourselves  by refusing to buy petrol. It was more of an inconvenience
to us than it  was  a problem for them.

BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can
really work. Please read it and join in! Now that the oil companies and
the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a litre
is CHEAP,  we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS
control the marketplace not sellers. With the price of petrol going up
more each day,  we consumers need to take action.

The only way we are going to see the price of petrol come down is if we
hit someone in the pocket by not purchasing their Petrol!

And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. Here's the idea:

For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY petrol from the two
biggest oil companies (which now are one), ESSO and BP. If they are not
selling  any petrol, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If
they reduce  their prices, the other companies will have to follow
suit. But to have  an impact,  we need to reach literally millions of
Esso and BP petrol buyers.

It's really simple to do!! Now, don't wimp out on me at this point...
keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of
people!! I  am sending this note to a lot of people. If each of you
send it to at  least ten  more (30 x 10 = 300)... and those 300 send it
to at least ten more  (300 x  10  = 3,000) ... and so on, by the time
the message reaches the sixth generation  of people, we will have
reached over THREE MILLION consumers!  If those  three million get
e***d and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30  million  people
will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you  guessed
it... .. THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!! Again, all You have to do  is
send this to 10 people.

That's all.(and not buy  at ESSO/BP) How long would all that take? If
each of us sends this email out to ten  more people within one day of
receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within
the next 8 days!!!
I'll bet you  didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you!
Acting together we can make a  difference. If this makes sense to you,
please pass this message on. PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR
PRICES TO THE 69p a LITRE RANGE

It's easy to make this happen. Just forward this email, and buy your
petrol at Shell, Asda, Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons Jet etc. i.e.
boycott BP and Esso.

Hi all this is an idea that has just been e-mailed to me;

<snipped>

Why let Shell off the hook?

I can't see this one working anyway. The oil 'market' isn't a normal open
buyer's market and is, effectively, controlled by a (in virtually all other
circumstances illegal) cartel - OPEC - who are, at the moment, ***
production. That's why prices are high.

Plus the petrol forecourts don't actually make that much money for the oil
companies - not enough to worry about a car user boycott anyway, however
effective it appears to be in emptying forecourts.

Cheers,
Probert.

And then 2, and then even more. Welcome to the future. It's like the
past, only with a lot less oil and a lot more worried car dealers.

Look at...
http://money.cnn.com/pf/features/lists/global_gasprices/
Now go put "peak oil" into Google.
Then contemplate China & India's rapidly developing oil needs.
Finally, buy a bike before prices of those start to rocket too.

Petrol is only 45% of each barrel of oil, the other 55% is used by industry.
You can boycott all you want and it's not going to make a shits bit of difference.

Fuel prices are that high because of all the taxes. Here in The
Netherlands around 70% of the price is taxes ... oil companies can't do
anything about that.

This has been doing the rounds for a while now... I've had at least a
dozen e-mails repeating this word-for-word.

Totally pointless, will have no effect whatsoever, since the bulk of
the price per litre in the UK goes to ther government.

I'd let Shell off the hook because they are the only place in the UK to
get 98RON fuel, BP and Esso are 97RON, I wouldn't even want to guess
about the ***you get at supermarkets.  The RenaultSport Clio, uh,
*strongly recommends* 98RON, and it makes a difference...

Our local Sainsburys is BP... 5p per litre off when you spend 50 or
more at the supermarket... saves me a bit on my 65-litre tankfulls...

I can't wait to drive the race-tuned C5's (I mean Sir Clive's design,
not Chevies) in Simbin's Eco-Marathon Legends demo in 2015 (I bet manual
editing of the Axis center="0.5000" lines in the *.plr file for brake
and throttle controls will still be required, though).

In the Brabham maybe. Not with the BRM. :)

I can't wait

:-) If I was more patient I'd sit and work out how many units of
electricity it costs to run GPL per mile. Not many I suspect...
especially as you use the same amount of electricity no matter how fast
you drive.

Between 60 and 70% of what we pay per litre of petrol is tax. Petrol
stations would suffer if this scheme were adhered to, yet they make
virtually no profit from petrol sales. So, not a very good idea, methinks.

I think that everyone should hold their breath until gas prices drop to 1999
prices.  The oil companies will obviously give everyone cheap gas when the
dead bodies start piling up at the filling stations.

Makes about as much sense as the original suggestion, but a lot funnier! :)
