I rented the Gamecube version the other day, I dont' have a PS2 so
can't comment on that version. THE GC version of this is purely arcade
and doesn't relly make an attempt at realism. IGN and Gamespot were
generous when they both awarded this game 7.3, I'd be unwilling to
give in anything above 6.5. Don't flame me based on the console I'm
referring to, because both Burnout GC and ExtremeG3 GC have far
superior graphics and handle very well for arcade racers. The graphics
are poor -poor framerates and very poor textures- and IMHO are
somewhere below NFS3 PC which was released in 1998! The car models
aren't too bad but still seem below NFS3 with a decent graphics card.
The graphics are poor enough that they actually impede your ability to
drive and play the game.
I've played every PC release of the NFS series from v.1 - 5 (NFSPU)
and this is no better than the v 2 for PC which was the weakest of the
PC releases. Someone in another newsgroup post mentioned that NFS HP2
was built on the NFSPU engine. Having played NFSPU a lot on the PC, it
seem that the GC version definately isn't based on it but instead the
NFS3 / NFS4 engine; may be true for the PS2 version which explains
it's better quality.
On the positive side, for pure gameplay, this game is quite good. The
Hot Pursuit mode is better than ever and there's lots of different
racing modes. Police choppers dropping explosives on you in HP is much
more fun than the gimmick it sounds like.
