GPL Helmet Colors

I didn't think of this till after some of the drivers on VROC while
looking at the replays mentioned the helmet colors.  While racing
online, Does GPL place the right helmets with the human opponents?  Or
does it just pick the colors at random?  e.g.;  If I chose to run with a
pink with yellow polka dots helmet, everyone else's replay of the race
would see me in my car with that helmet.  or, e.g.;  everyone else's
replay would have me in my car with their GPLs randomly selected helmet
colors?

I believe it does. It can be useful, particularly in single class racing
as it gives you an idea (if you know the people you're racing with)
whether the guy in front/behind is a hard man or a soft touch.

GPL Helmet Colors

Your helmet color is definitely displayed correctly to the other drivers
when you race online.  I can recognize many of the regulars just by
their car / helmet combinations.

I also like to know which AI driver I am near in offline races, so I
edited the driver.ini file to modify all the duplicates.  For example,
in the default setup, there are four white helmeted Ferrari drivers. I
changed Bandini's to black, Parkes' to red, and Scarfiotti's to yellow,
leaving Amon with the white helmet.

Yes, the color selected in the players setup are shown in online
races, too.

No.

Yes, with a pink helmet, if you have selected this color.
Polka dots are not available in this selection menue, though. ;-)

But, if you modify the .srb-Files in the brabham.dat, you can paint
your helmet the way you want: There are two files which seem to be
used as a "white" basic helmet for all helmet colors.
And when the (transparent) backgound is painted, the drivers get
square helmets. ;-)
But these files are not really white, more like grey. So I made them
more bright, and now white helmets (like eg. Surtees) look white, not
silver-grey. Other helmet colors look brighter, too.
But this modification only shows on my PC, not on others (unless
they've made the same modification). Maybe I make this "patch" public
after some more testing.

If this is true,  I wonder if you had painted the car... would everyone
else see that paint job?

No that's a different situation..

Car paints are on the client's side, and only act for that client.  The
helmet are just an easy 1 digit output (1 for Xcolor, 2 for Ycolor, etc..).
It's probably not that but you get my point.. you only download a couple of
bytes of data to get the helmet color, compared to let's say... 75k x # of
cars for a painting. Especially that GPL doesn't really have any painkit,
the *.MIP incorporated is often more than 1 file changed (and I won't go
into the car # problems here).

It's much complicated than you think to "exchange" car paints.

Yes the right helmet colors are displayed on GPL online opponents,
quite a nice feature I must admit, especially if you race in a league,
where you get to know the different drivers by their chassis/helmet-color
combination.

Seeyas on the track.

I did a similar thing, but I gave Bandini a light grey helmet, not a
burned black one ...

I don't remember the defaults anymore, but Hill now has a black helmet
(no white stripes, though), and Clark a dark blue one (for Scotland).
Rodriguez silver, Ickx dark blue, Stewart white.
