I'm still confused about Logitech wheels...

by Alle » Thu, 09 Aug 2001 08:17:50

I recently got a PS/2 and Gran Turismo 3.. and I want to also play Nascar
4 on my PC (after I upgrade it).  The GT3 manual says to get the Logitech
GT wheel.  The salesman at Best Buy said the GT wheel is not being
produced anymore, but that the Logitech Wingman Force Feedback GP wheel
was the same thing (red instead of blue), so I bought it ($99 - $20
rebate).

Is this really the wheel to get?  On the PS/2 it does seem a little
"gritty".  I read somewhere that someone wished they had gotten the GT
wheel which is smoother?  Duno..  On ebay the GT wheels are selling for
alot more than what I paid for my GP wheel at Best Buy.

So did I get the best wheel available now (in stores) for my PS/2 and PC?
I have a few weeks to return the GP wheel if something better is
available.

thx.. Allen

The GT Force is still being advertised on their web site.  Seeing as it
was just introduced I don't know why they would have stopped producing
it.  They are not physically identical, but I think that the only
difference aside from color is the addition of some extra buttons on the
GT.  I don't know why it would be any smoother than the GP, I think it
has the same drive mechanism.  I wonder if you and the salesman are both
thinking of the older Logitech Wingman Formula Force wheel, which was
discontinued maybe a year ago, and featured a much smoother cable drive
mechanism.

As far as the LWFF or any other wheels working with the PS2, my guess is
that any USB wheel would work except that not all of the buttons would
be read correctly.  I am also not sure that the extra buttons on the GT
would be read correctly by a PC, so I would guess that the GP is the
safest bet for now.

I have a GP on my PC (I don't have a PS2) and while I admit it's not
perfect it works well enough for the price I paid.  Before getting the
GP I had tried a Thrustmaster wheel that cost $60 more, and I took it
back the same night because I had so many problems with it.  Personally
I think that as long as the wheel is functional there are only minor
differences between the Logitech, Thrustmaster, and Microsoft FF wheels,
in which case the Logi certainly wins because of its lower price.  OTOH
if you are willing to mail order a wheel, it might be worth looking into
the Act Labs RS wheel, which is said to have a very smooth belt drive
mechanism.  Not sure about PS2 compatibility though.

Regards,
Hal

>The Actlabs Force RS and the M$ wheel don't work with GT3 on the PS2.
>The Logitech Blue and Red wheeled versions work.

Are ActLabs releasing a PS2 cartridge?

I thought one of the selling points of the Actlabs wheel was that it was
able
to connect to a PS2? What happened with that???
