GPL: redline.dll?

by Matthias Flat » Sat, 30 Oct 1999 04:00:00

After the 1.1. patch was released, I installed GPL on a NT4.0 system
with a Voodoo2 and a SB Live Value. The V2 worked, but the SB did not,
so I deleted GPL again, as it was pointless on that machine without
sound and joystick.

After the new Liveware 3.0 drivers were released, I checked the SB
Live again: still does not work on that machine under NT, but under
Win98 (where the network card does not work).
So I replaced the SB Live with an old 16bit ISA soundcard:  ordinary
WAV and MIDI sounds can be heard now under NT, fine.
I installed GPL again, but the engine sound is terribly distorted.
Changing the sound quality in the app.ini does not help.

Plus when I switch from software graphics to 3dfx, it says that
"redline.dll" is not found in the path, or "verite.dll"
I got a Rendition based card on another machine, so I know about
these. I even downloaded drivers from Rendition, and copied the files
in the GPL folder. Does not help, of course.

But why does GPL ask for a Rendition driver it is supposed to run via
the Voodoo2?
I've checked the "lastRasterizerDLL" in the "app.ini", and it says
either "softdll.dll" or "rast3dfx.dll".

First of all, the redline.dll and verite.dll files are only used by
Rendition cards (Thriller3D or Stealth). You don't need these if you're
using a voodoo card. Why GPL keeps asking for these files is beyond me.
Unless you're using a rendition 2D/3D card alongside your voodoo card...

Set the app.ini to use software rendering, then restart the game and try
to check the 3dfx in the option, graphics screen and restart...

I had the distorted sounds myself. I found out what was wrong. My
soundcard couldn't play the 8 bit engine sounds properly. So if you use
the wav. extraction utility and change all engine sounds to 16 bit sounds,
it will probably work.

No, Matrox.

Did that several times ...

At least the Ferrari.wav in sound.dat (16bit) can be played without
problems from the desktop, but within GPL it's bad.
Maybe the card (ESS688 based ISA) ist too old to work properly within
DirectX-games.

GPL: redline.dll?

enginesounds do sound different in GPL than the original .wav does. this
is due to the modification, GPL does depending on the current and the
max rev of the engine (and some other parameters). therefore if you make
a sound on your own (I tried to extract some from the film "grand
prix"), always check them with GPL after editing them ...
