Driving Simulation?

Driving Simulation?

by Anthony E. Strozy » Sat, 19 Jun 1999 04:00:00

I was curious if someone might be able to offer some suggestions on an
actual driving simulation, as opposed to an arcade style game...with
less of an emphasis perhaps on racing, and more on being able to explore
various environments in a car.  I'm actually not even sure such a
simulation exists; if not, then if someone might be able to suggest a
racing game that has the most simulation aspects, it would be much
appreciated.

Thanks,
Anthony

Viper Racing might be a good place to start -- excellent physics
model, and a variety of tracks.

Midtown Madness may fall more into the "arcade" category but it's more
about driving in a city-type environment.  The upcoming "Driver" game
should into the same category as Midtown Madness, but with more of a
plot.

Sierra/Papyrus produced a sim called "Drivers Education" a while back
that was actually a drivers ed simulator.  You might try to see if
Sierra still has that available on their Web site.

Actually this is what he said:

Midtown Madness has a cruise mode in which you can drive around endlessly, not
racing anyone or anything, avoiding pedestrians and obeying traffic signals and
merging with traffic in a limited but fairly realistic repesentation of a real
city.  You can even choose to eliminate the cops altogether.  You can choose the
time of day and season of the year, density of traffic, density of pedestrians,
etc.  I think it completely qualifies for what he seemed to be interested in.
Midtown Madness certainly can be a crazy arcade game, but it can be someting
entirely different if you choose.

MTM2 is Monster Truck Madness 2.  I think we decided to call Midtown Madness
"MM" or something like that.

And to think we were once marvaling at the complexities and detail
and fantastic physics model of NASCAR 2. Even though short ovals are
my first love in racing, I can't stand to play N2 for more than 15
minutes any more.

What sort of racing are you looking for?

If it's oval racing, I'd recommend Nascar Racing 2, which is available
for around 9 these days. You can also download a 3Dfx patch for it,
if you don't have a Rendition card.

If you're looking for the most challenging _pure_ simulator available,
plus high speed, close action and excellent multiplayer races, buy GPL
(Grand Prix Legends). It is without a doubt in my mind, the best
racing simulator we've seen yet.

Nascar 3 looked promising, but by removing the GPL physics engine,
they've taken away some of the hype.

In both GPL and N2 you'll be tweaking the car for each race and track
every time you race - more so in GPL.

Is it just me or is there anyone else who loves this game and thinks it knocks
the likes of Ridge Racer 1-4 and Gran Turismo into a***ed hat?

I'm not quite as interested in getting behind the wheel of a large racer
than I am in driving around a normal town in a normal car and seeing what would
happen if I did drive like a loony, and Midtown Madness gives you the chance
to do that.

If I had only one complaint it would be that it doesn't let me drive round my
hometown as that would be fun to do. I could drive through the shopping malls
a la Blues Brothers :)

I just bought "Official Formula 1 racing " by EIDOS

I've got a p-150 32 meg of ram and a 3dfx card (the old one) and it runs
great on my machine.  It is the best F1 game I've seen.  The graphics are
great, you can race from almost any view (the***pit view is real hard
IMHO)  The physics of the engine are forgiving in the beginner mode but very
hard in the expert mode.  I have heard the same can't be said for GPL.  I
don't have GPL bcause I don't think it will run on my machine.

Nascar 2 is also an excellent game IMHO.

I can only say to you my friend, wait till you get a new machine and try
GPL. The game you are talking about is pretty to look at but that is about
all that it has going for it. No disrespect intended, (you sound fairly new
to sims) but you have yet to be struck between the eyes by a real sim.

BTW Nascar 2 is pretty good....or was in it's day :-)

MTM2 isn't Midtown Madness.

It's Monster Truck Madness 2.

And, he is right.  It's fun and has great graphics.

I can't quite agree here.

Yep I've played GPL.  I prefer GP2 over it.  I think that is maybe more due to
me having grown up with Grand Prix since old Amiga days.

However, I have had a play of Eido's OF1R.  Ultimately you can't compare them.
Graphically OF1R is better than others, and surprisingly good on low end
machines.  OF1R is however no where near as involving as a simulator should
be.  Very few options in car setups.  But, it's still fun playing several
players.  So, I think OF1R stands up well, but is maybe in a different league,
and has a different target audience to say GP2 or GPL.

If you guys liked GPL, i don't understand why no one mentioned Monaco Grand
Prix Racing 2 or its predecessor F1 Racing Simulation both from Ubi Soft.
Great Physics and force feedback to boot.
