SODA

I was digging through my old CD's the other day, and came across SODA Off
Road. I did a couple searches for sites, but all lead to the real SODA
series. I was just wondering if anyone ever amde a 3dfx, or d3d patch for
SODA. I loved to play that game, but man software doesnt cut it ;) and
Rendition is long a thing of the past.

Thanks

nope, unless somebody has figured out how to make a Rendition wrapper that
works under d3d.    Ya know MGI has been tweeking Viper racing, perhaps we
could find the guys behind Soda and get a d3d patch straight from them.
Anyone remember who did Soda for Papyrus??

now ya got me going....I emailed Software Allies about a programer hacking
together a d3d patch...I don't expect a response.  And I checked out the
link to the demo...doesn't exist any more.  Infact it's not even on Sierra's
site.  Had to do a Google search to find a dload site for Soda Off Road
Racing.

One of the guys that worked for Software Allies used to post here, but
I'll be damned if I can remember his name.
I think how it went down was that Sierra promised a 3dfx patch for the
game when it was released, but then cut off development.
It's a lot like GPL, really. It was way ahead of it's time, having a
full 3D world when NASCAR Racing 2 was the standard.

I still load up SODA and play it from time to time, but it looks
really dated now. I had high hopes for Leadfoot and some of the other
offroad games to live up to SODA, but none have.

I just ran the demo in software...it was actually not as bad as I thought
it would be.  My biggest problem was getting the steering figured
out...first you can't just assign buttons if the game already is using the
button(like the shifting)  you have to assign the function that is using the
button/shifter/paddle to another unused key, THEN you can assign the freedup
button to the function you need.
Once racing, you MUST countersteer, but you must do that VERY early in a
corner.  I was spinning and looping almost everyturn because I was
countersteering but so late that the buggy was already turning around.  Once
I began counter steering almost before the buggy entered the corner, it went
much better.  Great product for it's day.  I know when I built a track
several years ago..it took hours and hours to render the track.  I wonder
how long it would take an XP 1800+ or a P4 to render a homebuilt Soda track.

Frankly, with today's machines, I think software rendering is probably fast
enough for Soda :)

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to even get Soda to run after Windows 98
:(

I had thought Shawn Nash did the programming on SODA, and his wife I think
did the art?  I believe Shawn since worked for Papyrus and now works for EA
on their NASCAR franchise...

Well, Steven had as a .sig the "Producer" of SODA Off-Road.  Looking at the
credits inside the game, it's easy to see who did who (in the case of that
title, a few people did more then a few different things!)

Tried running the demo.  Seems it doesn't like
Geforce 2 cards.  At all.  Software rendering
never kicked in.  :(

how odd, it should default to software, and it should run because it's
just direct x 3.
which .exe file did you use?
