Here are my opinions......

What I like:

1. Great graphics, like they should look in all racing games.
2. Damage is simulated better than in most sims, but still
unrealistically. The car you drive is able to perform in spite of
massive abuse, but you can ultimately kill it. At least they tried.
3. A career system that creates some feeling of immersion.
4. Grass and traps have a fairly good feel. Sometimes it pays to go
offroad, but usually not.
5. A ton of tracks and a wide variety of championships.

What I don't like:
1. Feel of cars (somewhat weightless?)
2. Career races are usually very short (2 or 3 laps)
2. No setup option.
3. No qualifying. You find yourself starting races on tracks you know
absolutely nothing about.
4. No black flags. You can get away with ***y ***.
5. The career system calls for you to repeat races to force
progression. Rather linear.
6. As you move up the scale of difficulty you are forced to win by
late braking, rough driving and practicing other unsafe driving
methods that would get you banned from real racing.

No way I can defend TRD2. I'm glad I bought it, as it offers something
different. Then again, I buy way too many games. Most sim purists
won't touch this one, but some of us in this group may enjoy the
diversion it offers.

To get an idea of how bad the physics are, try driving a V8 supercar around
Bathurst...   :-\

Hmm... the demo version has qualifying and allows you to setup your car (+
test your setup before race/qualifying).

likes = the best graphics I have yet seen in a PC racer
the best balance between sim/arcade physics in any racer
ever
                 very nice damage modelling
                 excellent sounds
                 beautiful tracks, with great variety
Dislikes = I don't like having the tracks and cars locked away
the damage modeling should be more severe
the a.i. is too easy in the turns
the menus dont use the mouse pointer
Overall I like this game more than any PC racing game in the last 2 years,
it's just plain alot of fun and compelling, cause I want to see and
experience all the cars and tracks.
Hopefully, there will someday be a way to tweak the physics to make them a
bit more simlike. A great game and a steal at only 29.99. The best $30 I
have spent in a long time. I also bought the XBOX version , which is about
equal to the pc version grapically, but at tv resolution.  Very smooth frame
rates. Unfortunately it is about 70% arcade instead of the nicer 50/50 ratio
of the pc version. Just not as much fun as the pc version, and not even as
simlike as even Gran Tourismo 3 on the playstation 2. Hopefully there is a
"pro simulation mode " that can be unlocked.

I've rented the XBOX version and played with the PC demo.
I'd like to hear you compare and contrast the full PC version vs. the XBOX
Res0zlgu, if you have the time....I'd especially like to know if you had to
do it over again, and buy just one version, which one would it be?

I'm leaning towards the PC version because of the pro-sim mode and the hope
that folks like John Bodin will come out with mods, new tracks and cars, and
other tweaks for the PC version.

As for likes and dislikes on the XBOX version...

Likes: Graphics, drivability, potential variety of tracks and cars
Dislikes: 90% of the game is locked up upon starting out, you only have
access to a few cars and tracks :-( where's that cheat code generator when
we need it... I also dislike the career mode for the same reasons as stated
above.

Why does everybody keep saying it's got great graphics? -Trackmodelling is
cruder than F1 2001 and the overal graphics are barely on par with the
add-ons for GPL, let alone any of the more modern games. In fact, when one
plays it, one wonders why it eats processor and GPU cycles like it does.

Fairly enjoyable game with mass market appeal, but not one of the great
lookers, IMNSHO.

Generally tend to agree but you've got some bits wrong.

Career races can be adjusted
There is a setup option
There is qualifying, theres a simulator to try out tracks too

Also there's a hell of difference between sim and pro-sim settings, to which
the AI adjust, they're a lot slower in pro sim.

It's not perfect but then that's what GPL is for isn't it.

If you want a good laugh, try driving an oval on pro-sim.

It's sad GPL is still the benchmark 3 years after is stopped being the
best simulator on the market.

That just about sums up the real BTCC in my view.  At least it would
have done a few years back.  Has it changed?  :)

Sorry, I should have clarified. There's a "Free Race" option that
allows qualifying and setups. Those options are just not available in
career mode, the part I was most interested in.

I'm missing where career races are adjusted. What menu do I find this
under?

I know setup and qualifying are available in "free race" mode, but I
don't see them in career mode.

Although I've enjoyed Codemasters racing games over the years, another
thing that always bugs me about their racing games is the menu system
and "confirmations". I'm so tired of repeatedly having to confirm with
a "yes" after selecting an option.

The career mode doesn't look like it's going to take very long.  I am almost
30% of the way through it and probably only have put about 5 hours into it.
That's a pretty short career mode.  In contrast it took me about 30 hours to
unlock everything in PGR2.

Still need the cheat code generator though.  I want to try the sim mode and
the realistic damage mode, and it looks like that's the only way to get to
them (other than buying the codes from Codies;).

The "American Stocker" series is definitely one of the worst features of the
game.  I have only tried it in the default mode but I thought it was
horrible.  Cars felt wrong on the ovals (though curiously didn't feel nearly
as bad at Laguna Seca) and the AI drove like idiots, braking way too early
and blocking way too late.  Oh well, it was only three races and then you
can do other things.

There's a file called mods.ini (forget what folder) that lets you
change the simulation mode, race length, and AI difficulty for career
mode.
