N3: Sears point line ups on wrong side

by Peter Ive » Sat, 08 Jan 2000 04:00:00

I just started a race at Sears point and after qualifying 1st it seems
to me that it would have been better if my car was in the right-hand
file instead of the left-hand one.  I presume the same problem happens
at Watkins Glen simply because both these tracks run clockwise, in other
words N3 has only been programmed for the pole-sitter to be in the left-
hand file.  Anyone else noticed that?

Peter...

The first turn at Sears Point (Turn 1 and Turn 1a) are to the left.......and
the pole position would therefore accurately be on the left side of the
starting grid.  However, technically....the first turn where position is
critical and where passing can be made during starts is at Turn #2....a
right hand turn (sharp and about at 50 mph).  So, you are correct that a
right side pole position could be an advantage at starts at Sears Point.  In
fact, in real racing at Sears Point......some series organizers (not sure
about NASCAR WC however) allows the polesitter to choose either left side or
right side starting positions. Obviously...that couldn't be programmed into
N3 in any meaningful way...since it would apply to only one track in the
sim.

If you run races at Sears using the Pace Lap option (on or off-line)....the
field should attempt to sort out to single file going up through T1 and T1a
and approaching T2...they should be pretty much single file since double
file through T2 is pretty tough for both drivers.  Most veterans of Sears
Point....will never attempt a pass at race starts unless they can be cleanly
by before heading up the hill into T2....its a formula for disaster if
passing under braking is tried on "starts" going into T2.  Ask Jerry
Nadeau......(NASCAR WC driver) if you don't believe me?  There's plenty of
video tapes around with his "now famous" WC start....from the right side
position .....with Jeff Gordon on the pole during 1998's WC Race at Sears
Point.  It is a pretty amazing piece of racing video if you ever get a
chance to see it!

Actually when I qualify second at Sears Point, the pole sitter always dusts
me in T1 and T1a, the left side has the advantage.

NASCAR WC allows the pole sitter to choose which row he wants to be on to
start the race. Jeff Gordon did that at Sears Point in 1998. In N3 though
it's no advantage.

Yeah, but in real NWC racing, they don't start before the pit enterance at turn
11.

I haven't looked at the N3 track .txt files, but if they are still the
same format (almost sure they are) you can change which side the pole
sitter (which will also change 3rd, 5th, 7th, etc.) starts from by
swapping the numbers for the two lines in the SEARSPT.TXT file:

this is the N99 line but should be very similar.....

PACEA 2 63278805 40122 -38602 0 35
^^^^^  ^^^^^ switch these two numbers
so that you have
PACEA 2 63278805 -38602 40122 0 35

Generally the pole position at sears is correct. It starts you on the
left side which gives you the preffered groove going through the left
hand dog-leg turn which should give you enough of an edge to fall in
front of the outside polesitter into turn 1. ( at least i think its
turn 1)
The glen is proper as well.
