The Pits is closing.

Folks,

The oldest and largest simulator website on the net is in serious
trouble of shutting down.  I know I made a joke of it in April, but this
is no joke.  Within a month or two (or less), the servers will be kicked offline,
and no more Pits.

I was just informed by the site admin of GIT.net,
who has been more than helpful over the last couple of years, that
The Pits is costing them $2500/month in charges.  We've had an
agreement, the last couple of years, that we advertise them as
our sponsor, in return for webspace.  However, this is all about to
end, as they can neither afford us, nor are they going to continue
doing website hosting.

First off, to cut down charges, I'm going to stop sites from linking
to files on The Pits.  Some of you have requested permission to
do so, and thank you for that, but unfortunately, this is going to
have to stop.  I apologise for this.  For the ones who didn't bother
to ask, nor bothered to tell people who they were linking to...tough.

But the main thing is that no matter what, The Pits needs webspace.
If anyone knows of a place that can be the new home for The Pits,
please let me know.  As well, we're probably going to go completely
"commercial" with full sponsorship, as I cannot afford the type of
bill that comes from running a website of this size.  So if anyone
knows of someone who may want to sponsor The Pits, please let
me know that as well.

The Pits has grown over the past three years, thanks to all the loyal
fans.  I appreciate all the people who have come to visit, and submit
stuff to The Pits, I hope that we can keep The Pits online as an
institution for sim racers to find whatever they want...free!

Cheers!

As a newbie this last six months, I have found the Pits to be a valuable
source of
sim related.....anything!

I truly believe that someone will come in to save the site !

Good Luck !

Tim

Wow, this is a slap in the face to the whole SimRacing Community.

I remember this happening with the biggest Star Wars website on the Net
http://www.theforce.net/  ).  The problem isn't the webspace, but more the
number of upload space (I don't know how much, maybe around 1gb per week
??).

I will contact Theforce.net autorities about the problem, and see what they
have done.  This isn't a commercial website, so it's the same thing as
ThePits, just in the SW Universe.  I,ll check it out and bring some news.

Let's do something here please. There's been enough big websites down in the
past 6months, I don't want ThePits to go down also.

Alright everyone this is serious, we can not thribe without the Pit's!!!!!
Don't worry a bit Jan, We will find something for the site to lay on but it
will stay going at all cost. to many love the Pit's to let it go so fast like
this. How big is the Pit's? anyway's? I might be able to get 50 meg's at a low
price but I have also found a site that is providing 2-50 megs of Free space.
go to http://users.nlights.net/marvin/thingies/   to there free web space
section and they have a list of sites with free Space. I think one on the list
does in fact have 50 Megs for Free go check it out and if you can't find any,
I'll do my best to raise fund's to buy Domains of 50-80Mb. I do not know but if
we can help we will.

Thanks,

-Mark
