This may have been discussed in this group already and I don't
know it because I just started reading it, so if so I am sorry.  Does
anyone know if any software company is contemplating coming out with a
drag racing sim along the lines of NFS or NASCAR?  I would be the
first in line if they did.  I am a car buff and I love drag racing.  I
have just about every racing sim made and I NEED a drag racing game.
Are you listening EA, Papyrus, etc?????????

If anyone knows of anything in the works, please let me know.

Thanks,
Todd Walker

A great idea but (and I know precious little about drag racing) but...

how would the sim work?  If I understand drag racing correctly, a lot of
time would be spent on car preparation, engine tuning, shocks,
aerodynamics etc..

But the actual race?  Warming up the tyres and waiting for the green
light, then holding down the forward key? Hmm, we'd be short-changed on
gameplay here I suspect.

In my view, the actual dragging of the car would be one of the least
important aspects of winning, so does the game become a Grand Prix
Manager type of sim?  Secure sponsorship, engine maintenance, build
chassis but include the races.

Does anyone else have any ideas?

Hmmm, actualy, a strategy game based on drag racing might be pretty
cool, now if only I new how to write sims :) That would be
interesting, a racing sim based on the stategy of winning a season.

Personaly though, I'm hoping for a sim based of off-road and or
stadium truck racing, of the quality of nfs, or ncr.

My 3.5 cents.

The actual racing would be very fun over modem.  imagine a high amount
of wheel spin, smoking tires and such. loss of
traction.  Fish tailing side to side while under power and correcting
just enough not to crash into the guard rails would be quite exciting.
Gp2 like crashes would also be very s***.

Tire pressure, weight distribution, wheelie bar settings, wing
settings, enging tuning, shocks, gear ratio would be my shortlist
of variables to tweak.

If you're going to wait for the green light before you go, I want to
race you in the first round!  I'll help you load your car back onto your
trailer for the long drive home.

However, you're right on the gameplay aspect.  How are you going to
feel it when the tires spin because you set up too little front suspension
travel?  How will you be able to feel the G force change when your motor
lays down 'cause you wound it up too much?  How can you bracket race
when you can't turn around and see the other guy?  Heck, you don't even have
any peripheral vision in NASCAR racing where it really matters!

The problem with a true drag racing simulator is that it would
eventually boil down to a reaction time tester.  Sure, there are a lot of
variables that go into the construction of drag racing cars, but I doubt
if you could do anything more than calculate a reaction time and
monitor shift points (if you're a Pro Stock car) to determine elapsed time.
I doubt that this would be capable of holding anyone's attention for the
amount of time that the sims like NASCAR racing have.  If you want
to go 300 mph, then you don't even get to shift gears but at least you
get a chance to work with those wild clutches that the Fuelers run.

home) but I don't know why you'd even want to drag race if you can't
feel the 3G launch.  I think I'll keep my drag racing real and my NASCAR
racing virtual.

Anybody who has been to an NHRA event or driven a car with loads of
horsepower can agree, there is an awfull lot of action once the drag car
gets to the line.  You don't just point the car, floor it and hold on.
It takes ALOT of skill and talent to hold 3000 hp in a straight line!

My only worry is that a computer sim couldn't do the sport justice.
