Which upgrade to play GT racing 2002 ??

by Verne » Sat, 23 Nov 2002 03:39:10

Okay all. I can maybe afford ONE upgrade to improve my system to play the
waaaaaay too anticipated GT Racing 2002. I currently run an AMD Duron 750,
GeForce Ultra, and have 320 meg ram..............which is the best upgrade
to make this upcoming mod run smoothest with the highest level of detail and
realism??

TIA Verne.......................ummmmmm, Dave, this is where
you say something.

It's a ***e between the GFC card and the CPU there - but I think for
like, 50 - you could have an Athlon 1700+ - which would offer more than
double the processor performance.

The GFX engine in the F12kx series isnt very efficient - thus I think the
pressure could well be on the CPU to help polygon-push - than the GFX card
for fill-rates

If you can really stretch to it - then a Geforce 4 Ti4200 is around 100 -
and looking at http://www.racesimcentral.net/
( Superb resource imho ) - then from a GF2 ultra to a GF4 Ti4200 - you'd be
looking at around a 50% graphics power improvement.

I'd go with the CPU first though.

Did they have a Geforce Ultra or is it a Geforce2 Ultra? If its a GF2 Ultra
hands down would be CPU power. The next part of the question is what will
your motherboard handle. You may need to do a BIOS flash for your
motherboard to "see" the larger CPU.

Just for an example my buddy has a GF2 Ultra with a P4 2.4 CPU and it smokes
my GF3 with a AMD XP1800.

What motherboard and type of ram do you have? I'd recommend upgrading the
cpu to an Athlon XP but if you only have PC 100 ram or an incompatible
motherboard that might not be possible.

And is that a GeForce 2 Ultra? if it is the biggest bottleneck in your
system will be the cpu, even if you can't get an Athlon XP Duron 1.3Ghzs are
'very' cheap. But if it's a Geforce 1 I'd recommend getting a GF4 ti4200
plus a 1.3Ghz Duron.
