Sygate NAT and Internet TCP/IP games?

by Icer- » Tue, 22 Dec 1998 04:00:00

I use the Sygate NAT on my home network, shares the cable modem
beautifully. Allows WB and DOA play (I'm assuming here) because these
are server based once you connect it opens a port for data transfer
automatically. Problem is if I attempt to host a direct TCP/IP
internet game (i.e. Longbow 2 or N2) no one can see me (using the IP
of the Sygate server, i'm a client with DHCP assigned IP address). I
assumed, as I am on the network and "listening" for calls Sygate would
route them to my machine. There is a Sygate config file to tell a
program where to look for incoming and outgoing calls, but how would I
ever find out what these addresses are for the above named games? Then
the fun of getting the "rule" written for it..

Anyone have a strong knowledge of getting this to work? I have written
Jane's and Sygate, waiting for a reply...

Thanks
Gary R.

Sygate NAT and Internet TCP/IP games?

Sorry, I can't help you, but I would be very interested in the solution.  I
have a cable modem (currently my ISP only offers 1 IP address) and am
looking at Sygate or Nevod's NAT1000 as a means of web browsing from my
second PC.  My question is: Can I host a GPL race from the non-gateway PC?
Or should I setup my GPL PC as the gateway?

[    Gateway PC (running Sygate)  ]
[     2nd PC     ]
cable modem ------ [ Ethernet 1 NIC ]  [ Ethernet 2 NIC] -------------
 Ethernet NIC ]
                              external IP addr      192.168.0.1
192.168.0.2

If I run GPL on the gateway, will there be a choice between both IP
addresses for Hosting/Joining multiplayer races?  Ideally it would be great
to host GPL races in which both external clients and my second PC could
join - but this is probably too good to be true.

Thanks, Brian

I am no Sygate expert, but I was unable to get GPL to work as either a client
or a server from the non-gateway PCs.

My kid plays Starcraft from one of the non-gateway PCs with no problems. I
think it has to do with the way that GPL assigns port numbers.

Save yourself the trouble, and set up your GPL PC as the gateway.

Have a nice day,
Krabby

Thanks for the info - I'll take the advice and save the countless hours I
would've spent trying to make it work.

Host GPL on the gateway PC and select that connections can
be accepted VIA your internet address and your local address.

That way you can play on ALL your machines :)

Jason.

And where do you see the option to do this?

I've read the Papyrus multiplayer servers (hosts) listen for client
connections on port:  UDP 32766

For the status of GPL host races to appear properly on VROC, the following
port also need to be forwarded by the gateway to the host machine:  UDP 6971

Not sure if this will help you for N2, but it might be worth a try.  See:
