>I think the appeal is the low cost of ownership.
>I kinda like the looks of a basic Civic, they can be a smooth looking car
>(stock that is).

Wait a sec though, say you get a late model used Civic for $7000.
You then get 16 inch wheels and low profile tires for a grand, 750
dollars worth of stereo equipment (a real low-ball estimate), a $300
Borla exhaust, and an easy $2200 in body cladding, spoilers and HKS
Turbo stickers.

Now you have over 10 grand in a car that looks like a race car (well,
maybe to an idiot), but still runs 19 second quarter miles.
Apparently, this is where some of the guys start feeling guilty,
because they start spending ridiculous amounts of money on miniscule
gain hop-up parts like headers and carbon fiber hoods.

I also understand that it can be more fun to drive a slower car at
it's limit than putter around in a brutally fast car, but if you're
going to do that, why not do it in something like a Mazda Miata that
has some sense of fun and style (not to mention the proper RWD layout
for a performance car).

Maybe it was unrealistic, but I thought it was cool anyway.
I don't many movies whose main part are cars :)

I was always wondering about the funny car decals; I thought it was
common in the USA to have them as a "tuning" part ;)

I thought they all looked like "hot wheels" cars...

I agree totally.   I've seen Ford Tempo's and Chevettes dolled up too.  They
buy the car cheap, then add this, then add that.  They can't afford the big
payments yet so their money pisses away on the car.   It's been done this
way for years, something to grow out of.   We're just seeing the low end
being Japanese imports now a days.   Doesn't bother me in the least, maybe
in 20 years we'll see them hopp'n up electric cars!  :-)

I never went that route with my vehicles.  Never was into draggin'.    When
I wanted speed, I moved to two wheels. :-)  Grip and cornering is more
important to me now adays.   Speed kills.   Can't wait to see what Nissan
does to the MAX.  Several rumours include rear or all wheel drive.

: Yeah, the poor man's Audi TT...
:
Not sure if you'll need to be poor to buy them, the used Z's I've seen still
fetch major coin if they've been hopped up to 300-400HP.

Oh sure, I wasn't really hinting at the price, just at the amazing
visual/style similarity.

I've seen a LADA boosted up.  Yes, a super modified 4x4 NIVA.  It had a 2.9
V8 cylinder, I think he wanted to replicate a proto version that is used for
Rally racing.

It was the most pathetic, yet hilarious thing I've seen in years in the car
industry.

They are... turbo diesels, actually. I'm sick to death of seeing TDi and CDi
badges.

I'm sure it is.

Yup, gotta admit that.

<snip!>
I drive a small Jap Stationcar w/ 112 hp. Our road taxes (or whatever) are
based solely on fuel consumption, which kinda hurts the gas-guzzlers. But
then again I couldn't afford one in the first place as the price of cars in
Denmark is about three times what the same car would cost in the States.
Yes, triple your prices! :-(

ROFL

I know some of the local "boy racers" are sick of seeing the TDi badge
on my VW Passat station wagon, or rather, the disappearing TDi badge....

Man I love these chip tuned TDi's, 45 mpg and more than enought grunt to
give BMW 320i's and such a run for it's money

Yeah I know, it's silly of me, but I can't help it, I'm still a kid at
heart

http://www.racesimcentral.net/'m on about
:-), this will be my next one,
http://www.racesimcentral.net/, bit more grunt than my
current one

Beers and cheers

Possibly he meant a car that takes at least 10 seconds to dodge all those
***y things that they stick all over the dash of riceburners before you
can actually sit in the car. ;/

Cheers,
Rod.

Ok let's tone that down a little... a recent experience has renewed my
appreciation for A to B comfortably and economically.

I did an army PR event (a march) with the army reserves last Saturday,
driving one of the vehicles and helping to man a control post. True to form
the army dug out the worst clunkers in the inventory for us to move our gear
and personel with. After a day of driving a 15 year old Ford Transit pick-up
with enough play in the steering to scare me, completely worn-out synchro's,
non-assisted brakes / steering and the ergonomics of a quartering table, not
to mention the refusal to start, the "hunting" and stuttering of the engine,
it was relief to get back in my "Japanese shitbox", have it start first
time, using power steering to pick my way out of the barracks and enjoy it's
smooth if fairly unresponsive ride on the way home (and again: not to
mention standing on the brakes doesn't actually mean "standing" on them). In
view of the poor mechanical condition of the Transit, I tippy-toed it all
day which left me mentally drained, so owning a car which is completely
undemanding to drive turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

M***of the story: it's all good an well to hunger for the days when cars
had "character", but it's only applicable if, and only if, these cars are
driven when in immaculate technical condition.
