I'm about to buy a Philips Acoustic Edge PSC706. Has anybody had any *negative*
experiences with this card and racing sims/games? Every single review I've read
speaks wonders of it, the least they give it is a 95%. And they're selling them
for $40 around here...

I don't know, I seem to remember reading some negatives about the drivers
for that card. Better check it out at "c.s.ibm.pc.soundcard.tech". I think
the best all-around card right now is the Hercules FortissimoII (rock solid
drivers, good sound, low cpu usage, digital in/out, seperate headphone jack,
A3D, DS3D, EAX1, EAX2) and it's pretty cheap too.

I have it and I love it!  The AE is the one piece of hardware they will have
to pry from my cold dead hands. :)

I went from a Live 5.1 to the AE and the increase in system performance was
assume. IIRC in N4 I picked up about 15 fps with the AE. The driver support
seams a little weak, but to be honest I'm still using the drivers that came
on the original CD and have not had any problems. I love how the AE
simulates 5.1 on games that don't have it. I was so impressed with the AE
card I since then have bought a Philips CDR and 19" monitor.

How much was it, and do you know what major stores might carry it? Philips
makes great stuff. I just bought one of their CD-RW drives.

David,

If you are looking for a sound card, you should also consider the Turtle
Beach Santa Cruz.

I've had one for about 9 months, and it's the most trouble-free sound card
I've ever had, and I've had most of them :)

It has great performance, great sound quality (the 6 channel DVD playback
with PowerDVD XP 4.0 and DTS is astounding.  Of course, the Klipsh ProMedia
5.1's I have help with that :) ) and the drivers are rock solid.

It does just about anything you could want from a sound card, and it's about
$70.

I just checked and they've just lowered the price to $33... Definitely I'm
going to buy it. They also offer a matching set of speakers for $45...

Looks like a couple retailers have imported huge lots of
Philips products lately (the first one had the cards for
$40 at first, now that the other one has them for $33 he's
lowered the price too). Well, in case you didn;t notice, I
live in Lima, Peru, so I guess it wouldn't be too practical
for someone leaving elsewhere to try to get one from here
(a 1kg parcel would be about $20-30 shipping)

Anyway, in case you're interested, here's where they're selling them:

I'm in Canada so our prices are probably mopre than what you will pay. But,
I got mine at Radioshack for $79.00 CAD. I could have got it form here
www.ncix.com for $75.00 CAD.You can also get an OEM version for quite a bit
cheaper if you look around.

I paid $129.00 CAD for the Santa Cruz, also from Radioshack.

Except in Win98. The drivers BSOD a few games under Win98 due to flaky VXD
drivers (fixable if you turn off hardware acceleration). It's a good card
for 2K/XP though. I have SC, SB Live! and Herc FortissimoII and IMO the
FortissimoII is a better gamer's card.

Do you use Win98? If you do then don't get the SC, read my post above about
driver problems under Win98 on the SC. They do have beta WDM drivers for
Win98SE though.

Well, I bought the card. After installing it, now GPL doesn't recognize the
throttle pedal (though the brake doesn't give any problem). I also had to
re-run the config utils for F12k1 and the JGTC mod, though the FIA GT and ALMS
mods gave no problem, and neither did GP3. Any suggestions?

Well, I just recalibrated my wheel by not pressing the brake completely... Looks
like the problem was the brake slides along a longer range than the throttle.
(electrically speaking, I mean)
