Sound in IndyCar Racing (and which soundcard?)

Hi Folks,

Background:     Running ICR on a laptop, no sound.
Foreground:     Going to buy a PC, soundcard and joystick.

PC - OK here.
Joystick - The jury's out on this one.
Soundcard - Um? Err?

I want engine noise and tyre noise which needs FM (sorry GUS!).  I'm not
interested in music (sorry again GUS!).  Therefore I need either a Soundblaster
(or compatible) or a PAS.  Now the big question....

Is the sound in ICR for a Soundblaster 16-bit or 8-bit (or both) ?

From what I've heard the SB-16 cannot emulate the SB Pro (stereo 8-bit) but
does emulate a SB2 (mono 8-bit).  Is this true ?

I'm concerned that if I bought a SB16 I'd only end up with mono 8-bit (I
imagine that stereo sound is quite useful for those "where's that ***y car
gone that was in my mirrors a second ago" situations).

As for the PAS I hear two stories; (1) Its ***y good or (2) Its a ***y
pain in the arse.  How is it for IndyCar ?  It seems a bit pricey (c/w
a SB (or clone) - is it worth it ?

What do you folks use ?

Thanks for any help.

I run it with an ancient Soundblaster 8-bit (chip revision 1.02) and it
workds fine (digital sound effects need tweaking of the irq on some
machines). I tried a 16-bit SB with CD connection ( no idea if that one
was a Pro), and it worked fine, too, but I don't recall  noticing any
stereo - Is the game stereo?

No experiences with other boards.
