Don't believe him too much, unless he has only PPGA-slot chips instead of
Slot 1 chips.  Around 95-98% of all 300a's will do 450 easily...many more
will go faster.
Look on alt.comp.hardware.overclocking and ask there...I guarantee you there
will be a billion and one replies.

I just booted my New 300A retail to 450mhz about 2 hours ago. I bought
the chip last month and just got around to getting the Abit BH6 today. I
used my old SDRAM 66.
Just did a quick Norton system info and  had 1293 MIPS and 523 MFLOPS,
with all default settings and no tweaking yet.

Sorry , Norton was 139.9 at 450mhz and 100.1 at 300mhz, and the other
numbers were from Wintune 98.

Hello,
Which model of the 300a is clockable.

I was about to purchase a 300a and the salesman said the version of 300a he
had in stock was unable to be clocked to 450.

Could someone please answer this please.

Many thanks in advance.

Regards
Andrew

Which 300a can be overclocked to 450

Hi,

<insert standard disclaimer>
Just about all (99%?) retail (originally boxed) C300A's will run
on 450, most on the default 2V and some can even do 504.
Of the OEM C300A's your best bet is with the ones that have a logo
on the circuit board that looks like an eye with a four leaf clover
in it. But not all of these will run on 450 and of those that do, a
higher percentage needs a higher supply voltage (which increases the
temperature, thus the need for better cooling).
Of the other OEM 300A's there's a percentage that also will run on
450, although fewer and more of these need a higher supply voltage (as
far as I can recall !!).

I myself have a clover OEM cpu with one heatsink/fan, that does 450 at
2.05V (which, btw, I had to increase to 2.1V just for GPL), and is now
running at 467/2.2V .
I have placed a fan in the side of the computer cover that blows cool
outside air right at the cpu, it keeps the cpu at the same temp as
without cover (how do I know? I've put a temp sensor on the cpu with
a display in one of the 5.25" docks)

Btw, I just read somewhere about a guy who tested a batch of retail
366A's of which about half would run on 550 on the default 2V.

Try and get the retail batch sl32a if you can, they are the ones that report
the most overclocking success. You can also order it tested to run stable at
450 from several sources.
I ordered an Abit BH6 mb with Celeron 300A retail from J & N Computers, it
came tested and set to run at 450 mhz, and has been doing so without a
glitch . I have had it for about 2 months now.
I put it in an Acer Open mid-tower, with just the power supply fan and the
fan that comes on the retail celeron chip, and it is running pretty cool
also at 28-29 degrees C system temp. My core voltage is 2.0
I feel pretty confident I could boost it up to 504 with no troubles, and may
try that soon.

The figures on alt.comp.hardware.overclocking are not that optimistic.
About 80% of the slot1 (old) Celeron 300a are willing to go the 450
without big effort (sometimes voltage has to be increased slightly to
2,2V).
Nearly all 300a are able to go 375 MHz, but you could run in problems
with AGP or PCI-hardware, because the bus-clock is out of range.

About the new (Socket 370) I actually don't know. I guess I saw one
post about an o'cing success. Just follow the group yourself.

I followed the overclocking group quite a while.
In my opinion it doesn't matter, if you have a retail/OEM or Malay/CR
or week 35 or 45 and so on.
Some guys did statistics in the group and found out an success rate of
about 70 to 90% or the posters. There was no batch or week or
whatsoever, which was overclockable significantely worse. If I'm
wrong, please correct me.

The older Retail ones are a lot more likely to overclock. Im referring
to the SL32A versions. The SL2WM which is the OEM (and now sold as
retail boxed) doesnt overclock as well. It can be done, and many do it
easily, but generally, the %ge of CPUs that overclock is smaller.

http://bxboards.com   has a survey, and if you see some of their
results, you will notice a definite trend to the SL32A Retail
overclocking to 450 at a much higher rate than the SL2WM.

One week they had the Sl32A week 47 or something, and 100% of the CPUs
surveyed clocked to 450.
For the SL2WM, they listed about 60% overclocked to 450.
