>I don't know, the video left me thinking I could do a much better job with
>my lowered Honda Civic in a parking lot.

You could.

From the video, I've taken the time from AFAIR Arc de Triomphe to
Place de la Concorde (or similar landmarks), and got the distance from
a map of Paris.
Resulting speed was around 100km/h. Wow!
The legend had it that it was a Ferrari V12 flat out in 5th.

Although I'd find it quite thrilling to view 199mph in traffic (despite the
sheer stupidity of doing that.. that's something I would have considered at
16-18, not at a ferrari-affording age), that isn't really what I need to be
satisfied.  My beef with Rendezvous wasn't so much the lack of balls-out
speed, or even balls-out ballsiness, it was just that is was, well how do I
put it, boring.  Maybe he was, as an other poster said, doing a good 60 mph
average (although with all the slow sections and near stops, I find that a
little hard to believe), or maybe he really was cookin' it all the way, it
just really doesn't seem like it.  And another semi-beef is the sound, it
didn't _really_ seem to match up with the car that well... either he had a
somewhat wierd way of shifting/getting on the gas, or it's dubbed in later,
and not that great, I don't know.  (And the sound would seem to report 5th
gear flat-out for much of the 8 minutes, but you'll notice as he climbs
through the gears, the scenery doesn't seem to go by any quicker)
Basically, it just doesn't live up to all the 'hype' and my post was part
rant, part venting, part warning.
I just don't want to be seen as someone who needs to see carnage or
near-carnage to get his rocks off.  Show me some good oversteers at any
speed, and I'll be quite pleased.

However, any thread that gets people posting links to car videos is always
good in my books!

If you are refering to my post of 100km/h or 60mph: that was
calculated while driving in a straight line, on the Champs d'Elysees,
AFAIR without turns, stops or other slowdowns. Time taken from the
video, distance from a map.

Tiff rules. (I assume, I haven't actually seen the movies on the site.)

When I first saw it (must have been 15 years ago or close!) I was very
impressed, as were my brother and father - that's two different people,
smartasses! - but onboard footage has improved so much since then that it no
longer cuts it.

Perhaps it's not impressive because it's smooth driving, and the speed is
deceptive.  Drive through a town at the legal 50kph and note how slowly the
scenery goes by, then go back to the film and watch it again.  He is moving
at quite a clip, and when you think of what could happen at any of the red
lights, offside passes of buses etc., you realise that (a) it was quite a
bit of driving (b) he had a guardian angle and (c) it was an idiotic stunt.

Still, as somebody else said, for bigger doses of (a), (b) and a giant
shot of (c):

Don't even think about trying this at home, kids. If you got the urge,
visit your local track or sell your bike.
