N3 and FPS with Glide & D3D ???

by Hot.. » Tue, 19 Oct 1999 04:00:00

Hi all, I have just got Nascar 3 and I have been getting it
set up for smooth game play before I start to race with
it, ok my rig is below

P2 366 O/C to 458 Mhz
Asus P2B-f
64 Meg SDRAM 100mhz
Voodoo 1 8 Meg
Asus 3800 TNT 2 Ultra (not overclocked)

Ok on testing FPS at Tally in 640x480 mode only for nascar
my graphic settings are below

Cars ahead = 25
Cars behind = 4
Track Draw = 4
Skid Buffer = Low
Full feild of cars
Graphics options to full on all

Right now If I select Glide and go out on the track, the FPS counter
once I get out of the pits and in the groove never drops below (30)31
even when i have mass pile ups ahead with lots of smoke, its just rock
steady.

Ok onto D3D mode I get out on the track and get in the groove FPS sit
at (28)28 but as I get down the track by the pits the FPS go to 18
sometimes lower if there is a crash or there are lots of cars ahead.

Now what I need to know is, how do I know if Nacsar 3 is using my TNT2
Ultra for doing D3D mode or will i be using the V1 ??, if its using my
TNT2 card for D3D why is D3D so much slower than my V1 using Glide ??,
I would have thought the TNT 2 would have blown away my old V1 card.

You may want to adjust the refresh rates of the cards and monitor, or turn
of the vsync lock.

There is a good utility called Powerstrip which lets you control which
card is responsible for Direct-3-D.  It also allows you to tweak your
video cards.  I have a Voodoo II 12M and an ATi Rage Fury 128 16M, and
this game runs faster, smoother, visually better using my Voodoo II
with glide and anti-aliasing, then using the ATi in D3D.  Though to be
honest I am a little surprised by your Voodoo I results.  What is your
frame rate on the pace lap with a full field on the back stretch at
Talladega.  Some how I doubt it is (30) 31, though it might be
possible at 640x480.

Wow how are  you guys doin this ?
I have a Guillmont xentor 32 installed in my agp slot.
I bought this card to upgrade from my voodoo 3 pci
I would love to be able to have em both in and be able to flip flop but
since there both "primary" cards I dont have a clue as to how to go about
this.

Ok I just did a race from the back with starting Pace lap using the
config in my above post, race was at Tally, FPS on the back straight
using my V1 was (23)23.

It's probably picking the Voodoo2 for D3D. Check the debug.txt file
in the N3 directory and there should be some lines listing what
D3D devices the game spotted, and which one it chose to use. If it
picked the wrong one you can add a line to n3.ini to choose which
D3D device you want:
RAST_DEVICE=0
(or =1, or whatever)
