And I can't help it, but I've lost confidence in the accuracy of the
lap times. I'm a quite consistent driver, but my lap times are down by
allmost 2 seconds now. And this isn't due to the new ride height:
I reinstalled the 1.0 version, used my 1.1 setup with 2.5 ride height,
and was immediately back on my old lap times. Then updated to 1.1,
tried again, and bingo, allmost 2 full seconds slower.
Best regards,
Andre

I'm glad they tested it and found that it did not happen on their
machines. Now I guess it would be good to find out why their
machines are OK and so many others are showing this slowdown.
Thanks!

Also, FWIW, I already knew that your testers were neither blind nor
stupid, because you haven't yet asked me to serve as a beta tester!

The problems caused by the patch are certainly tied to various
hardward/internet configurations and are not apparent under some
conditions.
What I have noticed is that marginal clients and hosts under version 1.0
of GPL seem to be hit the hardest with problems with the patch. Those
who had fewer problems while online (hosting or joining) seem to have
reaped the benefits of the patch.
Besides, very few of the beta testers are hot-lappers <G>.
Randy, thanks (not for anything in particular, just for everything....).

That's certainly not the case with me. I never had a problem with 1.0
and my cable modem, it worked superbly in fact. 1.1 is totally
unplayable online for me due to horrendous warping and stuttering.

GPL 1.1 SLOW MODE FIX...
(cm2081675028.kbunk.ispchannel.com)
Monday, 12 July 1999, at 2:39 p.m.
To clarify the temporary fix for SLOW mode (24 25 fps):
This is a temporary fix that may help some people while things get
straightened out.
SLOW MODE (24 to 25 fps)
Use ALT-F while training offline to obtain your frame rate. If your frame
rate does not exceed 24
to 25 fps and use to be higher (~36 fps) then chances are that you have the
slow mode
problem.
To determine if this temp fix will work for your system fire up your dial-up
account (modem)
and establish a connection with the Internet, even if you are n a direct
connection to the
Internet through other means like cable, network, or T1. Next start GPL 1.1
and try an offline
training session if your frame rate is back up or slightly higher then it was
under GPL 1.0 then
this fix will (should) work for you.
THE SLOW MODE FIX - for some
If you race online and your only method of connection is a dial-up account
(phone modem)
then these changes will NOT work for you since they involve disabling your
modem. If you use
some other method of connection for online racing like cable or network, T1,
T3, or you only
race offline then this change should cure your slow mode (25 fps) ills.
This fix involves making changes in the system control panel. The
instructions below are for
disabling your modem in Windows 98, should be very similar in Windows 95 If
you have not
been in the system control panel then you may want to ask for help from
someone that is
comfortable in the Windows system settings. I take absolutely no
responsibility for any
problems created directly or indirectly from making any of these changes -
you are on your
own
This fix involves disabling your modem in the system control panel. In the
Windows control
panel there is an icon labeled 'System'. Execute this icon to open the system
settings dialog. In
the system settings dialog select the "Device Manager' tab, this should
provide a list of devices
in your system. Make sure that radial button "View devices by type" is
selected. Find the
modem device(s) and expand the branch, your specific modem should be listed.
Click on the
modem listing that is specific to the modem that you want to disable and
press the 'Properties'
button. At this point the dialog depends on your modem manufacture, you need
to find a
section labeled "Device Usage" probably under the 'General' modem properties
tab.
After locating the "Device Usage' properties for you modem there should be a
check the box
that says something like "Disable in this hardware profile" - simply check
this box - this will
make all programs (GPL) think that there is no modem in your system. Click
the "OK" button
to exit the modem properties, next click the "OK" button to exit the system
properties dialog.
You should be asked if you want to reboot the system for the changes to take
effect - answer
yes or reboot your system.
GPL 1.1 should now run the way it was meant to run. When you need to enable
your modem
go back to the modem device properties and uncheck the "Disable in this
hardware profile"
check box and reboot. If your modem does not work do not call me.
I can tell you that when you get things straightened out you will NOT be
disappointed. The
patch is excellent, allot of subtle changes - just seems like the driving
experience is more real
and I do not have a FF wheel. Everything just feels more responsive but at
the same time with
slightly better control - the best SIM just got better! Thank you Pappy and
all the people that
devoted time to this FREE upgrade and thank you VROC for all your changes to
support the
new version. You people out there that are having problems - you will NOT be
sorry when
you or Pappy get things straightened out. I am sorry that the fixes listed
here will not get
everybody up and running but it should help many.
CONNECTION PROBLEMS:
On another issue if you are having connection problems try making these
changes. These
changes were recommended to me from Eric. Use the original "core.ini" from
GPL 1.0. Using
a text editor make the following changes.
Under [ Communications ] set the "clock_adj_delay" parameter to 12
Add the following lines to the bottom of the original GPL 1.0 core.ini file.
Use the [ Hack ]
parameter if want variable ratio steering - personally I like it. Also if you
have a FF wheel you
can probably add the parameters associated with FF wheels like [ Joy ] from
the sample
core, ini that installed by the GPL 1.1 patch.
[ Hack ] steer_ratio = 1 ; Enable low speed ratio override
[ Task ] synch_method = 0 ; Client synch method
I hope this helps and remember one thing this patch is free, you can always
go back to GPL
1.0 while things get straightened out. When you do get GPL 1.1 running
correctly you will not
be sorry!
Happy Racing,
Steve

In Response To: GPL 1.1 SLOW MODE FIX... (Stephen LaPalme)
You have found the answer to the mystery as to why some people have the slomo
offline
and others don't!! I did a little more testing and found that when I replaced
my PCI modem
with an ISA modem the problem disappeared! I think this bug will be stomped
on very soon
now! Thanks DaveG

In Response To: GPL 1.1 SLOW MODE FIX... (Stephen LaPalme)
In addition, I would to comment that after disabling the modem (which is
quite easy for me to
do with Win98 version 2, no rebooting required) you still need to make sure
your machine or
option setup is cabable of 36 fps. When experimenting with the core.ini I
thought I lost my fix
until I realise that I forget once to reset the mirrors to every 7 frames
instead of the normal 1 to
get a good fps my TNT2 Ultra card.
In another words... if you are only getting 20 fps, the slow mo effect
offline will still be there...
Make sure you have it setup to get 36 fps...
I imagine if you have a slow machine and don't get 36 fps normally with
1.0... I think you will
still have the slow mo effects with 1.1.
