*sigh* I'm now a qualified T1 mechanic.  I guess it goes along with being
an IndyCar mechanic.  The IndyCar itself is nearly indestructable,
even the tires (you should have seen the punishment they took last week
at our IICC race in Australia!), but somehow the controls are fragile :-)

You have to DRILL the rivets out.  Thrustmaster told me to use a 1/8" drill,
in a regular hand drill and that worked fine.  When you call them to get
the replacements, be sure to tell them that you don't have a pop rivet gun
and they'll send you screws to put it back together.  The repair procedure
is simple: drill out the rivets.  Unscrew the pedal rollers and set them
aside.  Gently take the top off; be careful on the right side where the
cable comes in, you can't actually take the top completely away because
of the way the cable is attached.  It's not necessary anyway.  Next remove
the bolt holding the pedal itself, remembering which bits go on the bolt
in what order.  Replace the spring and reassemble.  Once it's back together,
you'll need to limit the travel in order to prevent this from happening again.
I used a piece of 1x2 lumber cut off to about 6" and I put a piece of 1/16"
brass strip on the top to prevent the pedal shank from digging into the wood.

The replacement springs seem to be a different material; they have a different
feel - better in my opinion.  I've now had the replacements in for almost as
many hours of driving as the originals and nary a problem.
