MGPRS2 vs GP2

MGPRS2 versus GP2 popularity argument

A complaint that every F1 sim thread ends with claims of GP2's superiority started another long debate. David G Fisher cited F1RS's million-plus sales and website traffic as proof of popularity, while others dismissed hit counts and praised GP2's enduring playability, multi-player hot-seat mode and accessibility; most agreed GPL was in a class of its own.

Why does any thread with either of these to games mentioned always end in a GP2 is better than MGPRS2? Ok, if you think GP2 is better than MGPRS2, so what. I have yet to find GP2 in a store. As far as I know it's not availible any longer. It's not like someone is holding a GP2 box and a MGPRS2 box, and wondering which is better. I presonally like MGPRS2. I have not played GP2, nor do I really wish to, if I want to go back in time, I'll play GPL. I did look back in PCGamer and GP2 got a 95% in 1996, and MGPRS2 only got a 91% from PCGamer this year. Personally I like to see lots of F1 sims, I'm even looking forward to the EA F1 sim (it will at least be pretty, they all can't be GPL after all). When and if there is a GP3, I'll probably be one of the first in line to get it.
GP2 has been re-released in the UK as a buget game for aroun 9.99 WH Smiths has got it on it's shelves, along with EB and *** Megastore in Leicester DOug

Now I've got the hardware to run it it's even better. I have played most of the racing sims since GP2, they have all been deleted and GP2 is the only one that remains. If you want an opinion poll as to what the best F1 sim is, then it would be the F1RS/MGPRS2 line. F1RS sold over a million copies by itself in less than a year. mgprs2.com receives over 2,000 visitors a day, and it's predecessor (f1rs.com) went over the million visitor mark this past fall (also in less than a year). So if you want the opinions of sim racers, there's hundreds of thousands of votes as to which is the best F1 sim. People from countries where Formula 1 is popular like France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Italy don't seem to visit r.a.s. Same with South America. This is why the Ubi Soft titles are not the most talked about at here. David G Fisher

GP2 is a must for all F1 fans; even though it has been surpassed by F1RS & MGPRS2. GP2 is still very playable. Gp2 is very playable today. It was done in a era before 3d acceleration, and it's the only main gripe. I would still love to see 3d acceleration for it today. It uses only your Processor power to run it, and it was the main problem. Even today with a P3-500mhz it wouldn't run perfectly with everything on (and sky) at Monaco on the start in 19th spot and TV view on the side pod. It would still be around 150% of Processor occupancy. It's the main gripe (graphics). I play with everything on in VGA here. The driving feeling is probably the best on the market as from today, just behind GPL. It's different, you can really feel the car, feel the weight shifting under braking or acceleration. If we take out that it modeled a now almost "vintage" era of F1 (early 90's) where the driving style was different of today, it's a very in-depth driving simulation of F1. FYI it sold over 2.5million copies David btw from the PC data I have up here. There is tons of add-ons, probably the best racing software for add-ons on the market. Better than Nascar Racing 2. You can recreate any season of F1, by downloading those complete sets of tracks, car shapes, and car performance (you can change them with editors on the web). I understand your point of view, I prefer modern F1 sims also. But you just can't beat the purity of GPL. I don't really care for 1967 F1 cars, and the tracks are kinda plain, but there is not a sim out there that makes you feel like you really are driving, like GPL does.
Something I wanted to ask you was what hardward works best with GP2? I have a pentium 233 (mmx), and a tnt based video card (tnt, not tnt2). Also 32 megs or ram, is that sufficient to run gp2 at full frame? Edward Letendre. says...

The biggest problem with GP2 was Crammond's strange decision to expand time rather than drop frames when the CPU was overtaxed. If you didn't turn your graphic options way down (which meant going to VGA on my then Pentium 100), you would drive in slow motion. And what was even sillier were the people who exploited this and intentionally drove in super slow motion in league races, depriving themselves of the thrill of speed just so they could post a faster time. Other than that, a terrific sim for its time. Dave Ewing
ymenard 10 May 1999#466781
Not enough at all hehehe. You see, Gp2 does no work in your video card. There would be no difference with it whatever your on a Trident 1meg or a 32meg TNT2. It's pure processor power. The more the better. With the system you have, you can put every graphic on, and everything in your mirrors with Gp2, but in VGA. You will get % occupancy of around 200% with everything on in SVGA, dropping to 300+ on the starts or whatever you choose a different view than the***pit. I can bet 5$ that not even a 500mhz processor can run ALL the time in every circumstance Gp2 with all the graphics on. -- -- Fran?ois Mnard <ymenard/Nas-Frank> -- NROS Nascar sanctioned Guide http://www.nros.com/ -- SimRacing Online http://www.simracing.com/ -- Official mentally retarded guy of r.a.s. -- May the Downforce be with you... Is there any place on his website to access that information ? I never really cared at all for website hits. In average over 80% of a website hits is made from people returning to it in more than 1 time. Mostly when there is a web board or a news section. I take this from my experience with mega Nascar Racing 2 websites, who had multi-million hits. mgprs2.com has both a Forum and a news section. How can they have 2000 IP hits and make it for over a million ? MGPRS2 has only been out since November. How can they have that low average and get over a million. I agree with you, that it is the most popular "current" F1 game. I'm not sure how big a following GPL has (other than here in r.a.s. of course). I've played the demo to OF1 by Eidos, and MGPRS2 will probably remain the most popular F1 game.

It would have been higher, except most Americans don't have MGPRS2.
Driver 11 May 1999#466974
If you don't think MGPRS2 is the most popular "current" F1 sim, what do you think is? I don't think the "mass market" would think GP2 is "current" as it has no 3D support. There are only a couple of "current" F1 sims availible, (F1RS, MGPRS2, OF1, and F1-97, and F1-98, am I missing any?). Out of those, clearly MGPRS2 is the most popular. It's not a matter of which is best, GP2 was probably a better sim for it's time than MGPRS2.
Driver 11 May 1999#466975
And it still won't look as good as MGPRS2.
ymenard 11 May 1999#466976
Gp2 is still in the top5 sellers up here, even with Ubisoft based in our city (Montreal). The mass market is mostly made of Americans, so you can eliminate MGPRS2. Of course you will say the "but it's not out there yet" argument. Irrevelant. Remember that the mass market mostly has no Internet access, and also doesn't have a 3d card (even D3D compatible). Gp2 is their choice. Or Psy F1-97. Uh sorry, but still arcade games sell more than sims. F1-97 by Psygnosis is one of the only multi-million sold game, if you consider PSX sales.... it's the most popular F1 "sim". So what the heck are we arguing here ? People say MGPRS2 is the best and base that on facts like website hits and #of title sold. I just replied saying "no that's not a good argument". Actually it also depends on the graphics card as well. I.e. a good SVGA like an ATI with Mach32 or something like that will raise framerate significantly compared to a simple Trident or a Rendition based board. I know from experience...:) Don't know how the TNT performs under SVGA though. --Tel

Sadly nothing changes the fact that GP2 is 3 years old and still the best F1 racing simulation ever created. As was recently mentioned in a magazine, it has something for everyone from beginners to experts. Okay it may have been a little "hungry" when it was created and is a little old looking now but it is still a great sim. The thing about GP2 over MGP and it's older brother is that they both force concentration on driving, not racing. Personally I never felt I had to spend too much time worrying about how to drive GP2 I just tried to work out where I was faster than cars in front in order to get close and pass. MGP is the opposite. If I can get close I can pass but I have to worry about exactly how I'm driving rather than how my race is going. I have spent hundreds of hours on GP2 and a handful on MGP because if I want to have a driving sim I play GPL. M

Quite true- but i prefer MGPRS2 for the opposite. The car's are a lot more nervous, and it is harder to drive than gp2. it's all too easy to nip out and lap quickly in GP2 and then relax, whereas in MGPRS2 i find relaxing is impossible during a race. Likewise, it's interpretation of Qualifying is for my mind, the best in any sim avaliable anywhere. Z. Please remove NOSPAM from my email address when replying.
Obviously most people in rec.autos.simulators have played GP2 a lot a few years ago and are tired to it. But I just want to note, that there are still lots of people just discovering the game and learning to love and enjoy it. The most entertaining thing in my life is currently GP2 racing with full length competitions, following the calendar of official IRL F1, and impersonating as my fellow countryman Mika H?kkinen. I use some up-to-date driver, car and track mods you can get from gp2.com. One of the most amazing things in GP2 is, that the different levels of competitiveness among the computer controlled cars and player car(s) are very realistic, in a mysterious way. For example, in the Brazil race I passed Scumacher just three laps before the end and won. Note that I get to enjoy this a little everyday, because I usually save the game after some 15 minutes to 30 minutes of racing. So I race one 1,5 hour F1 race during the weeks between the IRL races, in several sessions in different days. Additionally, at race days we often play a multiplayer game at my house, starting exactly at the same time as in television. It is major fun! If there are several players, you get to watch most of the game in TV, even though you are racing with GP2.

Personally I never felt I had to >You have just properly argued why F1RS/MGPRS2 is the better >F1 simulator. Really? As I just said to Zonkie, do you *really* think that real racing drivers go around tracks thinking "accelerate - gears - brake - gears - turn in - accelerate - gears etc."? No. Of course not. It's as instinctive to them as the rest of us in road cars. GP2 simulates that nicely as I don't spend ages worrying about what I'm doing, I just do it and free my mind up for the racing. This isn't familiarity either because I've done this since I picked it up for the first time. Again, really? I fail to see that entirely. Perhaps you'd be advised to read that again and tell me how I did that. What I said was that GP2 allows me to think like a racing driver and to work out my strategy rather than spend all my time keeping the car under control. I know the F1 coverage in the US is dire but try to stay on the same page as the rest of us when we talk about F1, it would help. Um... seems there is a good reason why Netcom users are generally considered one millimetre above AOL users in the intelligence stakes.

No. Of course not. It's as instinctive to them as >the rest of us in road cars. I don't do that when I drive F1RS, GP2 or ICR2 or even Nascar 1999. So while I am not sure what *YOUR* problem is, but it is certainly not specific to F1RS. I do think that real drivers know what gear they *MUST* be in at certain points on the track. You don't? Funny I found GP2 (and World Circuit) and F1RS (and MGPRS2) to the same in this respect. Could you be obsessed with this? all my Your version of what a racing driver does perhaps. Haha this is rich. Perhaps you don't realize that the F1 cars (this year any way) are on the hairy edge, where the slightest mistake causes disaster. Concentration is everything. But wait forget that, you know everything there is to know about F1. Why is that? Picking on my ISP does not prove your point. Or did that somehow make GP2 better than F1RS? DUH... Its intepretation? It is qualifying as it is, not how someone thinks it should be ;) Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad game it's just taken the route so many people do and that is either creating a full on sim or an arcade racer when they could do what GP2 did and allow a certain amount of movement so that the arcade racer can have fun with it and the sim racer can up the realism and race properly. What do you mean F1 coverage is dire? There are F1 web sites, we have TV coverage (through cable TV). I realize that it's not as easy for us to go see a race in person, but F1 coverage is availible to all with an internet connection. And if I'm not mistaken Microprose is an American company, I could be wrong about that, and I'm sure you guy's will point it out if I am.

ixnews8.ix.netcom.com>: I know exactly what gear I should be in and when but I find that F1RS is much less forgiving of even a tiny error. Unless I'm mistaken many F1 drivers get entries or exits to corners wrong and don't end up facing the wrong way immediately. Perhaps that's their skill but there is no way of feeling a sim car as it starts to slide (unlike a kart, fford, or F1 car) in order to bring it back. Obsessed? Well considering I haven't touched GP2 in over a year I doubt that. Um? So you're saying that F1RS is exactly like racing in F1? No I never said I knew everything about F1 but if *you* do you will realise that F1RS is not a simulation of F1. It's the best sim of a GP weekend and has a lot of the "right" things about the racing but something about it isn't quite right. It's all down to how the sim works. There are things in a car you use to drive that can't be included in a sim (sound, feel, look of the tyres/track vibration etc). Creating a "perfect" simulation of F1 without being able to have these things only succeeds in creating an imperfect simulation. GP2 was coded to counteract these absences and as such is a more accurate F1 sim. Of course the biggest difference between GP2 and F1RS/MGP is simple. The 3 years between the 2 games have encompassed huge changes in F1. The point was your arguments are ill thought through, ill concieved and for some reason your reasoning is "F1RS and MGP are better because I say so". Whatever... I think it's fairly safe to assume we'll not agree on the issue so lets end this thread.

I do know that I can drive 25% races with manual trans and no driving aids and never go off or miss a gear. Since you can catch spins in F1RS this happens rarely. I catch spins in F1RS all the time. I meant obsessed with the shift thing. I would suggest just driving :-) Nope. I'm saying it is *MUCH* better than GP2. 3d Graphics, 3d sound and excellant Force feedback (where you can feel when you car is not handling in the turns) plus weather effects is enough in my book. No it isn't! <argumentative grin> Seriously though, it's clear everyone has their own opinions on this subject. I for one cannot stand F1RS and think it is the biggest load-o- shite ever, but that's just MHO. You like F1RS better and so be it, fine by me! I have no ill will towards people who like the game, I think that is great! I just really don't like late 60's early 70's era F1. I did read a great book about it though. I forget the name but it was about the formation of M.A.R.C.H. A very good book. It was unfortunately highlighted by Jochen Rindt's wreck during practice in which he died. He had such a lead in the points that he still won... I plan on getting the Logitech FF wheel this weekend. How could it be his loss? He doesn't like it! The best graphics and physics model could not convince me to play a drag racing sim, even paying me by the hour wouldn't do that. Strictly speaking, not the only one - its predecessor F1GP had the same feature. But I could never get it to work properly with Win 95 - not enough conventional memory in DOS mode, no sound for some reason in Windows mode. Besides, once you have GP2 then F1GP becomes laughable. The AI for a start was incredibly inept - on Ace level I could start at the back of the grid at Phoenix and take the lead by the first corner, I also lapped the field 8 times at Monaco once or twice. And I won every race of the full Ace 100% season using the default car setup at every track. I expect everyone else had the same experience - I've never seen much discussion of F1GP on usenet, but then I've only been online for 2 years...
