F1 Racing Simulation or GP2: which is more realistic

A poster asked whether F1 Racing Simulation or Grand Prix 2 was more realistic. Opinions split, with many preferring GP2's feel and its large library of add-on tracks, others backing F1RS or its Monaco Grand Prix Racing Simulation 2 update, and several noting that the F1RS demo was worse than the full game. Jacques Villeneuve's reported use of GP2 to learn Spa was also discussed.

Which one of these F1 sims is the msot realistic? Thanks for your input! Travis Kallner

Travis Kallner wrote You know Im always right Travis ;-) I would say download the F1RS demo (or the MGPSR2), judge by yourself and if you don't like it get Grand Prix 2. GP2 is starting to get a little old (similar to Icr2 in the "oldiness"), but it's game engine is still great and the almost infinite number of created tracks and utilities makes for tons and tons of Entertainment hours. There is great "year" patch that changes every track, cars, and physics to create fun and different challenges. -= Fran?ois Mnard <ymenard/Nas-Frank> -= NROS Nascar sanctioned Guide http://www.nros.com/ -= SimRacing Online http://www.simracing.com/ -= Official mentally retarded guy of r.a.s. -= May the Downforce be with you... You're always right? When's the last time I said that? <VBG> Yeah, I'll probably try out the F1RS demo in a few. Just didn't want to waste the time on downloading it if it turned out to be very poor.
> You'll have to ask an F1 driver for a realistic answer :) True. But I'm just looking for an answer of "Yeah, I know following basics of physics that its impossible to go into a tight corner at 500 mph and still make it out without a scratch." :) Thanks for the comparison of the two. I'm gonna download the F1RS demo, but probably end up buying GP2 just because of the facts you stated, plus it has more file support on the net.

Can I still buy GP2? What 3D video card works best with it (if it is 3D). Is it a good game? I enjoy F1RS and Monaco, and GPL, if I ever got a decent wheel. Would I enjoy GP2. By the way, I have Monster3D II (sli), a Viper550, 128 megs of ram, and a PII 450.

You'll have to ask an F1 driver for a realistic answer :) Personally I think gp2 recreates the feel of formula one better even though F1RS may be more mathematically correct. I get the feeling that ubi soft just got some data of renault and whaked it into the code and there you have your game. Too bad for those of us that actually wanted to feel some of the pressure and intensity a real driver goes through, or actually have fun! Ive been playing gp2 on and off since it came out and little details crop up that I still didn't know could happen in the game. The AI in gp2 is much more human than the mindless drones that go around on rails in F1RS. About the only thing F1RS has over gp2 is accelerated graphics, even then the models seem "small?". I read that one of the developers say the only unrealistic thing is that you can see more than an F1 driver, the way you can see either side of the tires is helpful but unrealistic and gives the tracks and cars a small look and makes accurate driving difficult. Gp2's engine and skid sound arent the greatest but give you much more feedback than any game while F1RS sound like a synthiszer with a cold. Also im in a typing mood so here is a quote from Pommie Aussie V8 Racer Russel Ingall. "I enjoy Grand Prix 2 the most because, as a driver, I appreciate how technical it is. Just from a basic technical point of view, GP2 was much better than F1RS. It reacted much better to what you did to the cars. F1 had better graphics but the car set-up was not as good by a longshot - adjustments to the car didn't have the effect they were meant to. I was a little dissapointed. I use GP2 on the longer races, like six*** laps, for concertration training. You have to stay consistent and focussed, just like in a real race." Phew that was a lot eh! Please don't flame me ubi lovers I was really looking forward to this game when it was comeing out so long ago and I was just realy dissapointed that it wasn't better than Gp2. Pretty sure GP2 has no hardware 3D support...but with your system, there should be no problem running it with detail maxed! At the time of release, I was miffed that I had to scale detail down to run on my P166. I ran it recently on my P2-300 and was blown away (again). Jacques Willeneuve practiced on GP2 before his first try at SPA, this was before F1RS was out. Basically it helped him to get to know the track, but he said that the car handling was totally unrealistic. At least wew know what a real F1 driver says about one of these games. ] >Which one of these F1 sims is the msot realistic? Thanks for your input! >Travis Kallner
Get the MGPRS2 demo, not F1RS. Also, change your tires to soft as the default is hard tires. There is a lot of file support for MGPRS2. >You're always right? When's the last time I said that? <VBG> >Yeah, I'll probably try out the F1RS demo in a few. Just didn't want to waste >the time on downloading it if it turned out to be very poor. If you have a 3dfx card of some type the game will kick ass. If you do not have one of these cards then the game will probably suck. Also GP2 has no 3D card support of any type. It also has no weather changes. F1RS has great weather changes. In fact you tend to loose your rhythm (at least I do) simply because the shadows move during the course of a race. You can start the race with no clouds and end up totally over cast. F1RS also has rain! Some have reported that the rain will even stop and start during a race or session. Also, I have an Ensoniq AudioPCI (SBPCI64) and use the 3D sound patch. I have been saved from many wrecks simply by 'hearing' the computer driven car next to me. You can also hear the cars infront and behind you shifting from the left to right side of the track. To really hear this you do need either headphones or to crank up your normal speakers. F1RS also has good editors and 1998 carsets which people have created. I use them and they are superb. I tried MGPRS2 and returned it. IMHO it did not add enough to F1RS to even justify the $19.99 price. Also on my P2-450 with 12MB voodoo2 card the framerate at monaco was worse than F1RS. And the 3D sound was worse also. All in all I thought it was a step backwards. IMHO these reasons are more than enough to not even consider GP2. BTW, the reason I gave the one word response is that anyone who read even a little about F1RS would know all this already :-) I am a big modern F1 sim racer (I even tried Road & Tracks GP) and IMHO the only sim with it all is F1RS (or MGPRS2 if you can't find F1RS). Notice I said 'modern'. I have never even tried GPL because I am not into that era of racing. -- Header address intentionally scrambled to ward off the spamming hordes. cisko [AT] ix [DOT] netcom [DOT] com

I remember an interview with Villeneuve about how he used GP2 to learn Spa. He said he was only able to qualify about 14th in the game. Don't know what his AI difficulty settings were. Dave Ewing > Knowing Jacques he probably spun and came last. Then walked off saying the > game was ***:)
Tony 18 Feb 1999#450975
As I recall, that didn't have anything to do with difficulty sections, but the fact that you can't feel anything in a sim. Most drivers rely a LOT on physical feedback, and a sim doesn't give that you. I seem to remember him saying something like it's just visual, and that's not all that a driver needs to go fast. I do know that he regularly plays all sorts of video games. And for what it's worth, the person who suggested that Jacques use GP2 to learn Spa was Mika Salo. TB

Sucked stones? I take it this means that the real F1RS is better than the demo? I tried the demo and I just couldn't drive it, it was like the car weighed 4 tonnes and had no breaks so I breaked at GP2 points and just ended up in the kitty litter. Then I went back to GP2. If F1RS is easier/lighter/better/more like GP2 than the demo then I might get it. Is this the case? --Matt Wooding

It's okay if you say that to the regular guys, but to say that to a new guy, it's just false and misleading advertising... The product is a lot better than the demo, and F1RS is one of the best modern day F1 sims available. l8er ronny -- Your mouse has moved. Windows must be restarted for the change to take effect.
