I have all these, too, I just got RC2K and I am having great fun with it.

I am with you on this one.  There are plenty of people in here who will pick
on you if you don't want to use the***pit view because it's the 'only real
sim way' or some such crap.  Of course they are correct, because if it is a
'sim' you have to simulate an actual driver's view of things.  Aside from
that, I find it easier to drive in many sim/games using the bumper cam,
probably because I can see the road better!  In many cases, the sensation of
speed is much better, as well (the grotesque NASREV).

The best way is the way that makes you happy and allows you to drive your
best.  In the Papyrus NASCAR sims  I have always used the in-car
perspective, likewise for Viper and RC2K.  I hate the in-car perspective in
SCGT and use the bumper cam there.  In Powerslide I used the bumper cam but
in DTR I use the***pit.  In TOCA2 (and TOCA1) I use the "bonnet view"
(sort of a roof cam deal).  In the NFS series I use***pit.  For drag sims,
In Burnout and NIRA I use bumper cam, but in NHRA I use***pit.  In GPL I
use***pit.  In Driver I like the***pit view until I hit something and
can't see over the hood.  In Midtown Madness I enjoy the***pit perspective
without with dash, but with the little heads up display.  In Monster Truck
Madness I use bumpercam.  There's another dozen games I can't remember right
now, but they vary also.  It's up to you.

Lets say the***pit is more 'accurate', but not necessarily better.

YMMV

what's teh best viewpoint?

Hi, I'm fairly new to the auto sim scene, but I'm rapidly getting
***ed.  I have Viper Racing, NFS4, and just got Rally Championship
2000.  All are awesome games!

I have a question though.. I seem to prefer the "bumper cam" view in
all of these games. I tried the***pit view but I just can't seem to
drive as well in that view.  Yet the bumper cam view somehow doesn't
seem "right" for a simulation.  I just wanted to know what everyone's
view preference is and whether I should stick it out in***pit view.
Is that ultimately the best way to play?

I just remember being really uncomfortable with the mouse/keyboard
combo way of playing in Quake until I got used to it and realized it
was the best way to play.

It's got to be the in-car, driver view for the total, simracing experience.
Games which don't offer said view are labeled "arcade" without 2nd thought.

I think my main problem with the***pit view is that it not really
simulating actual driving.. When I drive I can swivel my head around
and see out all the windows, thus making it easy to judge how close
something is to me.  In the game, I'm kinda stuck with a rigid forward-
only viewpoint.  I keep trying to look to the sides!

That is something that I have to admit that I liked in the Nascar
Revolution games.  You could program buttons to look to
your right and left.

what's teh best viewpoint?

OK, thanks for all the input.

I've decided I'm just way too uncomfortable with the***pit view.. its
just somehow distracting.  I literally crash twice as often using the
***pit view in all of the games!

Of course, I had to do some real-life comparisons. I notice that when
I'm driving in real-life am able to "zone out" the inside of the car
and concentrate on the road ahead and to the sides.  The bumper-cam
view actually comes closest to this same perception.  In the***pit
view my focus always seems to fall onto the dashboard and steering
wheel instead of on the road ahead.

It must have something to do with the limited size and restricted
viewing angle of a monitor.
