Old news. The Team owners (sponsors) wanted to run the Indy 500 and made him
switch. Plus he's trying to buy GM and needs all the money he can muster,

We already went over this a month ago.  I don't think we need the same
discussion again.

Like they said, old news. But CART is looking like coming back from
the dead, now that they have finally sacked Joe Heitzler.

Well, at least now it's official old news. I can't see either series
coming back from the dead, but then WDIK?

That's old news..... Marlboro needs to advertise to an audience that is dumb
enough to start smoking.....
besides, all tobacco advetising is banned after 2006.
good riddance i say, tobacco is a terrible drug.

Does that apply to CART or other US based racing series?

all series, IIRC.

I know the EU is doing it, which was why all the talk of Ecclestone moving
F1 races to Asia and Russia got started, and I think that the FIA has since
decided this also.  But when did CART, NASCAR, or any other US based racing
series decide to do this?  Just curious.  I know there's been talk but
hadn't heard anything definite from any series or entity over here.

Nascar/RJR's approach to this has been (In best Sgt. Schultz voice) "We
know nothing...nothing!"  <G>

IOW, something's happening, but not known publicly.  It will be
interesting; RJR literally saved Nascar's rearend with their sponsorship in
'71.
If a replacement needs to be found, won't be easy IMO.....and you can bet
it would be some asinine pc type of corporation.

The federal government sued the big tobacco companies a couple of years ago,
this is part of the settlement.

No, the settlement was what reduced them to the 'one sponsored series' deal,
not a total withdrawal from racing.  RJR, for example, cut their NHRA
sponsorship but got to keep NASCAR and it's "Winston" brand involved.  Same
deal with Penske, who could race with Marlboro colors in CART but not when
he ran Indy (mute point next year since he's jumping to the IRL).  Or is
this some kind of phased in deal I wasn't aware of?

Some info at http://espn.go.com/rpm/2001/0717/1227221.html

Under the Master Settlement Agreement, with which tobacco companies had to
be in compliance by the end of the year, cigarette manufacturers had to
reduce their sponsorship to a single program in a 12-month period.

This is correct; one series only is allowed.

yea, its a gradual "withdrawl" with all sporting event advertising to end in
2006.

No, it doesn't seem to be and nothing that I've read says that.  Do you have
any sources for this?  You may be right but I'd like to read something that
backs it up.  So far everything seems to say otherwise.
