Ok, what's wrong with my setup?

I***the Ti4600 video card so that I could run N2003.  It does, and it seems
pretty smooth(for the short time I was in the race).  But, my GPL performance
has suffered.  Now I'm getting FPS down to 24 even though my V5 was pegged at
36.  Why should a much better card run SLOWER?  I downloaded and installed the
D3D patch, and that didn't help.  Athlon 1.2G, 384MB ram, win98se.  Drivers are
4.13.01.4230.  I'll admit that I never paid attention to previous discussions
about drivers because I knew I couldn't afford a new video card then...
Help?
Also, someone earlier mentioned poly rate in N2003.  Mine is 157.02, if that
helps troubleshoot.

Eldred ,first things first---Did you do a fresh windows install? If not I
would definetly start there.

why don't you run GPL in OpenGL mode and see if you have a difference
between D3D and openGL ?

Two words, Eldred: Open GL.

Just as a comparison, my system is 900mhz with 256MB RAM and a Ti4400 card.

I get a poly rate of over 600, so something is amiss with your system.
First of all I would try OpenGL as suggested already.  Also, the answer is
not always to use the latest and greatest driver.

I would suggest downloading 3dmark and testing your system with various
driver scenarios.  It will give you a score for benchmarking.

I concur.  D3D is simply not worth using in the N4/2002/2003 series.
The graphical differences are minimal and I generally get better
framerates driving solo in D3D, but with other cars around I've seen
as much as double the framerate in OGL using a Ge4.

 That poly rate has me thinking there is something defiantly fubar
somewhere.

Just somethings to consider.

1) Complete removal of 3dfx based drivers. IIRC there were issues with a
3dfx card leaving stuff behind that would mess up an Nvidia card.

2) Check for updated motherboard driver set. For example the 4in1 drivers
for VIA chipset based motherboards.

3) IRQ sharing/conflict

4) How do your other D3D games run?  It been my experience that GPL has
always performed better with a 3DFX card.

5) Nvidia cards usually do better in OpenGL than D3D. While you might "fix"
GPL you won't really be fixing the problem, just avoiding it if its a D3D
based problem.

6) Reinstall DX.

Likewise, even my Dell notebook with a GeForce2Go (basically a weak 2 MX)
gets 350, so you have a driver issue probably.  I dropped back a few
generations on the Nvidia drivers to get the best performance, and often the
best driver for OGL isn't the best D3D driver. It's a bit frustrating,
actually.

Something looks dodgy if that's all you're getting out of that Ti4600 with
NR2003.  Here's my system and rend_dxg.ini contents:

(abitkr7a/xp1800/98SE/256mb/sbaudigy/ti4400at300/600)

[3D Accelerator Analysis]
PolyRate=666.04
AnisotropicLevel=4
TextureSetSize=235405312
BitsPerPixel=16
TestedFullScreen=1
Height=960
Width=1280
vSyncMode=0
MipMapLODBias=-0.50
BestStampVOffset=0.50
BestStampUOffset=0.50
UseStencilBuffer=0
MipFilter=2
MinFilter=2
MagFilter=2
Renderer=NVDD32.DLL
Version=Product 4  Version 13.1  Build 4109
Vendor=NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4400

OGL will almost certainly get you better framerates than D3D.  Running GPL
(details maxed, w/GPLEA cars & updated tracks off RSC forum posts) in OGL
(12X10 w/4XAA & 8XAF) I get FPS in the upper 20's at the rear of the grid
and then pegged at 36 as soon as the AI sorts itself out in a second or so.
The biggest factors for FPS in traffic are as they've always been with GPL,
the AI and the detail bias.  I run at 75%, as maxing it out takes me down
below 25FPS briefly for offline starts with the updated cars.  And the AI
remains a big hit whenever they get bunched up getting around a wreck or in
some turns like the hairpin at Monaco on lap 1.

I found with my Ti4200 that I got a vast improvement in framerates
over the "standard" D3D and OpenGL options using the alternative
OpenGL (driver?/rasteriser?) available from racesimcentral.  That
place is beyond my reach here at work, but I'm sure someone'll have
the link.  Knowing Google, this post will probably be redundant by
now...

Mark

Did it.

I don't think I have a VIA chipset...

Dunno.  Possible, I guess.

I don't have(to my knowledge) any other D3D games.  The only other games I run
are Diablo II, or Civ III.

I gotta find the OGL drivers everyone mentions...

The FPS slowdowns I was talking about were during solo practice, for the most
part.  I guess I gotta check some more stuff...

nope, get the open gl patch for GPL and you'll have it on your video setup

I have a geforce 4 and use opengl and it rocks...

Thats just an example. All motherboards will have a set of drivers. What
motherboard chipset do you have?  Any idea what your AGP bus is running at?
1x 2x or 4x?
