Where are the women racers?

by Tim Leighto » Thu, 11 Mar 1999 04:00:00

I just joined VROC paddock, and noticed that nearly all the 500-odd members
are male. Apart from the clearly exceptional and wonderful Alison, whose
website turned me on to GPL in the first place, there are very few, just a
handful in fact. Even Daisy Duke turns out to be a man!
There was an interesting article in F1 magazine recently in which Giovanna
Amati and another female F1 driver were more or less saying that F1 was
quite a sexist environment. Surely that isn't true of Virtual racing??
Or are women just not interested. I'd like to know people's views.
Thanks :-)

My wife is as in to F1 and CHAMP cars as I am. She has even gotten
in to rally and touring cars as of late.  But she is not in the least
bit interested in computers. I've tried believe me. I bought her her
own system , got her connected to our ISP. I thought surely if she
sees what's out there on the internet this will get her interested.
Nope.

I don't get  it either.

You're lucky. My wife isn't interested in computers or racing. She only uses
the computer for e-mail, but it not at all interested in games other than,
"You don't know Jack." As far as racing is concerned, she allows me to have
my passion, but the mere suggestion of taking her to this year's Laguna Seca
for either CART or SuperBike produces a reply like, "Why would I want to
that. Besides, what's a Corkscew?" Aiiiiyeee!

Oh well, at least she lets me enjoy racin'.

My wife Dianne often spends time in GPL and Nascar.
I am trying to convince her to get on VROC and have a bit of a go in a
couple of the novice events, but as yet i have had no luck convincing
her to try on-line racing.
She drives the Coventry, as she finds it is the easiest of the bunch
for her to drive competitively against the ai.
I guess i am lucky that my wife loves motorsport, so i have a good head
start with getting her involved in sim racing.
Cheers,
Ron

Mine's standing behind me asking stupid questions while I'm in the
middle of turn 3 with a truck on either side o' me...
Otherwise she's just shaking her head and calling me a "little boy" and
wagging her finger mumbling somethin' like "tsk, tsk, tsk, boys and their
toys...."

is as in to F1 and CHAMP cars as I am. She has even gotten

Lucky stiff...does she perhaps have a sister who is single?  I gotta get
rid of this NASCAR-only girlfriend.  Can you imagine what the fights on
Sundays would be like if I wanted to watch F1 & CART and she wanted to watch
NASCAR?

Right you are, Pat!

Cindy Von Hausen has competed in three of our "Nail That Track" events.

She and other women (and any competent, considerate drivers) are encouraged
to join in the fun!

Thats smart. Finesse before power. Back when I was rock climbing , I
thought it was interesting that women were so good at it. (and they
are ) It's because they put more finesse and forethought in to an
ascent. Men tend to want to power through it. Linear vs. non-linear
thought process I guess.

We are all lucky that they put up with our crap. It's a bonus if they
dig racing too. : )

Well my wife loves to Autocross my race car.  It kinda funny her approach,
sine you uses the first two runs to really just motor around the course and
look around.  Then she starts to open the car up in the third run, then
asks me where she is a bit slow.  After telling her where to start braking,
and areas where she needs to be flat out she usually puts in a final run
that is at least 5 seconds faster then her third run.  I find it kinda
anazing that she drives on the street very legally and hates to even look
at a sim, considering when she autocrosses the only thing you see inside
the helmut is a big smile.
