N2 & Dx5 calibration woes

by Dave E Henri » Wed, 29 Apr 1998 04:00:00

I have N2 installed and running both through a dos boot and the Start menu
item in Win95.  When I run  in Win95 I have a difficult time calibrating my
T2.  I do the dx5 control panel AND the TM Propanel first.  Then I try to
calibrate in Win95.  What happens is before I've reached the full travel of
the wheel, the value being read by the sim resets to -1 and becomes
unusable.  (usually what happens is I hit the properly assigned brake pedal
and the sim thinks it's the gas also){usually a wall stops me...hard}
  Anyhow...when I calibrate under dos...there is no problem,,,the full
travel of the wheel and pedals can be read and it does not roll over back
to -1.   Since I can get the dos calibration it is not a serious problem,
but with more and more Win95 only sims...I figure I'd better get a handle on
this...
anyone seen or heard of this before?

First don't even bother with the Games Controller applet of DX5 (unless
you want to toggle the "poll with interrupt".  Stick with the ProPanel.
However, it looks like you may have another problem here.  Are you
overlocking your bus?  It sounds as if your gamecard can't handle the
speed of your computer and is returning values that are too high and
thus the wrap around to -1.  Also you might want to check and clean all
the pots on your device as this may just be a "spike" caused by a dirty
pot.

However, if you have a fast machine or are overclocking your bus, you
may want to look into getting a speed adjustable gamecard.  Especially
the case if you have an older soundcard.

Thanks for the info MC.   I took out my old(and I do mean old,,,pre
pentium I think) ACM card back before I upgraded to P200mmx.  The old system
was a Cyrix 586-100 and the joysticks/wheels jiggled unmercifully when I had
the ACM card in.  Once I took the card out, the jiggles went away.  Most of
my controls seem to work fine going through the SB16pnp so I didn't bother
putting the ACM card back in.  No overclocking, everything is stock
