Don't know how many have already seen this yet, but there is now an online
petition (not my own, passed to me by email) to retire the number 3 from
NASCAR.  to view and/or sign, see:

Oops, make that 1800 sigs, not 18,000. Jeez, I could really use some coffee.

While I agree with this 100%, a part of me would like to see Jr. run the
number for the 2001 season as a tribute, and then have it retired at the
Champion Awards at the end of the year...

I live in the UK and we see very little of NASCAR (groan). I'll risk being
flamed but I think Jr should inherit the number 3. And if he dosn't want it
then retire it.

Farewell Dale, men with charisma, style and true grit are hard to find.

Weird. I just signed at 2:01pm PST, Tuesday Feb 20th. It says there are
"21906 Total Signatures" <which is a copy and paste from the page itself>.

This is interesting to those of us in the UK and Europe, where this
sort of thing is pretty uch unknown. After all, Ferrari didn't retire
the number 27 after Villeneuve's death. To be honest (and I accept I'm
in a minority here), I don't really like this as a method of tribute -
what would you do in F1 (even under the old-style numbering system) if
the champion was killed? Retire number one?

Again, from my perspective across the pond, there is no equivalent to Earnhardt
in F1 today (or for that matter, possibly ever), not even Schumie. Its not a
case of Earnhardt being the champ either. He hasn't won it for several years
now.

I agree.  The ONLY person who should be able to run #3 should be Little E.
Side question: how DO the numbers get determined?  Can a new team just pick any
number that's not in use?

OK, so would you have supported retiring 27 when GV was killed?
