N2 from DOS / Major HD Thrashing

I need to run N2 from DOS because of some Win98 compatibility issues
(Thrustmaster), but N2 from DOS goes REAL slow and my HD is continually
thrashing up till I actually get to the race.  At that point it seems
fine.

It would be nice, though, if I could figure out what is causing this.  It
does the same thing with either the 3dfx version or the non-3dfx version.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure but it could be that when you installed N2 your HD was kinda
fragmented so the install is sprinkled it all over the drive? A little piece
here and there rather than all together in one area. Could try uninstall,
defrag, install to get a cleaner version. Be sure to save any custom files
(cars, tracks)  you may have first. Hope this helps.

Had the same problem.  BEFORE you run the Nascar, just run run smartdrv.exe
(remember THAT old thing?!)  If you don't remember it, just go to your
Windows directory and type "smartdrv"  THEN run Nascar.  TaDa!!!!

I put the command line c:\windows\smartdrv.exe in my nas3dfx.bat file.  Now
she flies!!!!!!!

FYI (and in case you didn't already know, smartdrv is the old disk cache
used back in the DOS and 3.1 days!!!

Have Fun

Thanks!  I was on that track.  I visited www.quarterdeck.com today
looking for something to help me with my DOS memory.  Never thought of
smartdrv.exe...
