The pit controls are in fact very simple:
When pitting you see several lines of text on your dashboard.
One of these says "leave the pits" or something like that
Another says "tyres" and another says "fuel"
You can see that there are parenthesis (like these:[]) around one of the
lines on your dashboard. When you push the fire button you 'select' the
action described on the line with the parenthesises. You move the
parenthesises up and down with the joystick. On the screen with fuel and
tyres you can move the 'selected' item (the item with []'s) to the right
and left as well, again using the joystick, this time from left to
right... Pressing the fire button means 'OK'.
When you have parenthesises around the line with 'leave the pits' (like
this: [leave the pits]) you can just press the fire button and then
you'll have to just sit back and wait for your crew to finish your
pitstop...
I agree, of course the potential of the game is huge (think of racing
with sudden showers, blue flags (when the leader tries to get past for
instance), not to mention black flags, stop/start-penalties and so on),
but I think we'll have to cope with the version we already have as
Microprose shows no sign of developing the game further...

Or was it the other way around? Hmm...
