ICR Problem: Judging handling

After a haitus I've been playing ICR again, and I notice I've got the same
problem I had last time:

I know the difference between under and oversteer (push & loose) and how
they affect handling, and how to deal with them.  My problem is I'm having
trouble determining WHICH condition is happening as I drive.  I hear
skidding and I see myself going into the wall, but I can't decide whether
it's because of push or being loose.

What clues should I be looking for to tell which is the problem?

Usually if you are having an understeer problem the car will loose
control on the front wheels and you end up doing a very wide turn banging
against the wall nose-first. If you have an oversteer problem the rear
wheels will loose grip and you end up doing a spin banging back-sided
against the wall (specialy when you accelerate on turn-exits).

As Fireball Roberts once put it (I think) "If you hit the wall with
the front of the car, that's understeer. If you hit the wall with
the back of the car, that's oversteer, Sonny."
