NFS3 Crashing Problem - fix's please

by Felick » Wed, 30 Sep 1998 04:00:00

A mate around the corner bought the sim and wasn't able to run the
game however.  After several attempts he came to see me and we decided
to try in on my machine.  It did exactly the same thing.  The game
runs fine until it has just finished loading the final part before the
actual game play begins.  ie the loading line along the bottom of the
screen gets to the lower right of the screen and then stops at the end
- nothing happens - just when you think it would 'kick into life'.
Both of our machines locked up and had to be reset at the same point
each time.

I have read the 'read me' and disabled all the applications I had
runnng - tried different sized installs and tried changing the
selected device in the "3d device setup" menu.  That caused a general
protection fault screen to come up.  Pretty much everything - but
still no luck.

As our machines are not identical it seems odd it has happened to both
of us at the same place during loading.  The game  has been taken back
to the seller in the meantime until we get this sorted.  they
installed it on a Pentium 160 (I think it was anyway) and it ran O.K.

Both of us are running Celeron 266 chips with 100mhtz boards.  I have
my chip running at 400mhtz and his it at 412mhtz.  Overclocked - yes,
however this is the only game that we have that doesn't run so I doubt
that to be the cause.  I have a Pure3D (6meg) 3dfx card and he a
Diamond Monster (4 meg).  We both have 64 meg (100mhtz) ram and
running Win98.  If other games did this, I would be happy to accept I
(we) have done something wrong but this doesn't appear to be the case.
I appreciate the game has only recently come out and these sorts of
things will no doubt rear their ugly heads just when we don't want
them to.  But it would be nice to try and figure out what the problem
is.  As it is just before the gameplay begins I wonder if it relates
to the graphics side of things - ie 3dfx.

Any suggestions anyone??

Try it with the Celeron at default (266) speed and see if it runs. Unreal
for example is fussy about overclocking due to the demands it makes - maybe
NFS3 is the same.

Nope - I have just tried that and still exactly the same thing I'm
afraid.  Before anyone asks, I do have the latest drivers from Canopus
for the 3dfx card and it is running at the default speed.

I do wonder if it is still some sort of video problem as it "turns to
custard" just when things are supposed to start leaping across the
screen!  My 2d card is a Diamond Stealth 2000  (2 meg) by the way.

Had the identical problem until I clicked on the "REG" file and updated the
system registry..

I am having this same problem and I have a Millenium II AGP graphics
card.  Has there been any resolution to this.

Me too, P150, 160Mb, Mystique 220 & Righteous 3D, blue screen of death when
launching, all correct direct x drivers, EA support have yet to  come back
to me.  Everything else I have works fine.

Use the virus checker found here

www.avp.com

and check for the CIH virus.. that is likely the problem.  Other virus
checkers don't usually find this virus.  Someone in this newsgroup
gave me this advice when I was having the same problem and he was
right so check it out.

Probably somewhere on the net through a dload or something.  I had
24000 exe's infected.  Pretty much every one of them on my computer.
Strange that it didn't have any affect on anything before NFS3
