Help me fix my video problem PLEASE!!!

I just got Nascar2 last night and it is about to drive me crazy. First of
all it wiped out my Internet Explorer and then when I finally got the game
to start it has a long pause every 20-30 seconds. As you know this can be
very dangerous when you are moving along at 200 mph. I have a Matrox
Millennium video card. I read what it said in the manual about updating the
BIOS. Been there done that. I also installed a newer video driver from
Matrox. I couldn't tell any difference. I tried installing the univbe
driver that came with the game. It must not be compatible with my card
because when I start the game it puts a empty square box on the screen
where the mouse is. It stays on every screen even when you are driving.
When I uninstalled it the box went away. I know some of you are going to
tell me to get a reactor card but that is out of the question. I just
bought this computer back in July. It is a Gateway 2000 p-5 166xl. It has
32 Mb, 2.5 G hard drive, and 8x CD-ROM. It was top of the line when I got
it. Like I said I installed the newest BIOS that Matrox had and it didn't
help. By the way this pause is about 1-2 seconds long and has happened on
every track that I have tried to drive so far. I couldn't wait to get this
game because I liked Nascar 1 alot but I am very disgusted with Nascar2. If
you have any ideas then you can either email me at

Look at the readme files that come with N2.  They have a section in there
about the Millennium.  I have a 4MB Millennium in a P166 w/64 MB Ram and it
works just fine in DOS but I get all sorts of wacky colors in Win95.  Like
a high color version of 16colors on the screen.  Hard to describe.  Lots of
contrast.  Everything is the wrong color.  Reinstall in DOS and see if it
doesn't do the trick.

I just experienced the same thing on my system.  My solution is to change
the icon for N2 to run the N2.BAT file in the nascar 2 directory.  allow it
to run the smackply even if it causes an error.  What that will do is allow
your system to stop any threads that might be running, (ie, desktop theme
playing a sound that runs into the begining of your game.  Wait about 3-5
seconds from the time you get the error message (if you don't have the CD
in) and then hit Abort to enter the game.  Seems to work just fine.

PS,  I remarked out the smackply line in the N2.BAT file and my system
would not run the game.  I also have a 4MB MGA Millennium.

Are you running under WIN95?  I have read about guys getting pauses in
WIN95, so that could be it.  I am using a WIN95 shortcut to NASCAR2, but
I have it set so it actually reboots to DOS when selected.  It works
great that way!  Either that approach or a manual reboot to DOS should
fix the problem.  Good luck.
