Jerky wheel revisited

OK, so I installed DirectX 7a.. no change, still jerky.  Also, I can't find
where to change the dead zone settings & stuff.  I assumed it was in the
Game Controllers area in the Control Panel but it ain't.  Also, when I try
to switch from the Direct Input to the Generic driver from within GPL, it
won't let me.  There's no movement when I try to calibrate.  And I've tried
installing various gameport drivers.. the same jerkiness remains.

I missed the original post, but what wheel are you using, and how is it
connected?  If it uses a soundcard gameport, what soundcard do you have?
Generic advice is you need a card with a good gameport, like an SB Live
or a dedicated gameport card.

The SB Live gameport doesn't seem to solve the problem.  I have a TM Super
Sport wheel connected to an SB Live and it is still jerky as hell.  I've
tried both generic and Direct input in GPL, have checked and unchecked "poll
with interrupts enabled" in the calibration panel, have set it up using both
the Thrustmaster calibration software and as a 3 axis 4 button controller,
and tried various combinations of all these variables, and it's still
jerky.  At home I use an ACT RS wheel, and with a Montego soundcard (digital
gameport) it is jerky and spikey like mad, however with my old SB16 it's
smooth as silk.  Is there something I'm missing about using digital
gameports, or are they just much more sensitive to pot noise than older
analog gameports?  Does it come down to the quality of pot in the wheel?  I
sell both the Super Sport wheel and SB Live soundcards from my store, and
customers are asking me how to reduce the jerkiness.  I'm coming up empty,
any suggestions appreciated.

You need a PDPI L4 game card.  I'm out of stock but read about the product
in the Tech Notes section of www.rs2league.com.

Try CH Virtual Pilot Pro, CH GameStick 14, or CH F-16 Combat Stick drivers
from Control Panel >> Game Controllers panel ( not the new one which
can be downlaoded from CH site with "(win98)" writen next to it, but
original you've got with Windows98, i suppose. And tell me what you think.
Helped me a lot.

The wheel is a CompUSA Formula Racing wheel (15 bucks!  Best deal ever), but
it's not the wheel 'cuz I plugged in the joystick and it gives me the same
jerkiness pattern (it's hard to explain).. I recently put in a Creative
Ensoniq PCI sound card in to replace our Yamaha ISA card.. the Yamaha had
been giving me problems but the wheel/joystick worked fine with its
gameport.

Well, it doesn't give me any of those specific options but it does give me
CH Flightstick, CH Flightstick Pro and CH Virtual Pilot.. none of which will
recognize the wheel.  No matter which controller type I give it, I get the
same jerkiness.. most pronounced near the center of movement.. and I can't
find the dead zone etc. settings anywhere.

Same here.  I can plug pretty much any piece of  ***controller into my SB16
and it doesn't jitter.  My Montego and SB Live give me grief with even my best
wheel.  I'm convinced it has to do with digital gameports, but have no idea how
to resolve the problem.  Suggestions, please!  TIA.

Wait, you get a better 'connection' with the SB16 than you get with the SBlive?
Surprising...I thought the digital was supposed to be SMOOTHER...?
