Jerky wheel!

OK, so I ran GPL flawlessly for a year.. I then had to re-install Windows
along with all the drivers.  I'm pretty sure I have the same Glide version
in there as I did pre-reinstallation.  But now, the steering is course and
jerky!  Even with the slider set to totally non-linear.  The jerkiness
appears in the Windows calibration screen to, so it's not just GPL.  What
happened?  It's still useable but I miss the smoothness.  Everybody enjoys
the smoothness.  I want the smoothness.

I don't know if this will pertain to your situation, but I noticed a
very coarse, notchy steering feel in GPL and the calibration screens
as well when I had both DirectX7 and CTFJ on my system. Removing CTFJ
took care of the problem for me.

I have DirectX7, but I don't know what CTFJ is...
Maybe I should just go back to DirectX6?

Try using the generic driver instead of the DX driver.  That helped a
lot for me.

Hmm...maybe it stands for Center The F'king Joystick?

Could it be your joystick dead zone setting ? If I set mine to zero I get
lots of shaking in my steering wheel when stationary.  Also look at a replay
in GPLDump. Set the graph for Steering and Zoom to maximum on a section of
straight track. With a dead zone setting of zero I see 15 to 20 degrees of
steering input when I know I'm not turning the wheel.  If I look at a replay
with the dead zone set to 2 degrees
the visible shaking of the steering wheel itself, and in GPLDump graphs goes
away.  But, there is always jerkiness of the crosshairs in the windows
calibration screen no matter what I do.

Centering Tool For Joysticks, IIRC.

But that was a good guess :-)

And I always thought it meant:
Center the F$#(#(*$  Joystick....

if you had pre thrustmaster equipment on a 386 you'll
know why the expletive was included...

Or maybe I should try DirectX 7a?  It mentions something about better game
port compatibility, and I do so want smooth steering, but it also says it
cannot be uninstalled, so that makes me worry.. but then again it seems DX7
can't be uninstalled.. argh!  What to do?
(At first the steering was both coarse and jumpy.. I unclicked "Poll with
interrupts enabled" and now it's just coarse.. but I can no longer find
where to change my dead zone settings & stuff)
