Derek Smart. I'm surprised you haven't come across him.
For the benefit of anyone (ie most of the group) who can't be bothered to go
look at comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.space-sim and about a dozen other groups, he's
a lone game developer that took several years to release a pretty average
game called battlecruiser3000 (bc3k or bc3000) & has a hate crowd far in
excess of anything the West Brothers or Geoff Crammond might get here.
There's nothing fundamentally wrong with the game, but crucially, unlike
most game developers who's pride & joy is shot to pieces online, he can't
help but reply to all the flames.
I used to read alt.fan.elite several years ago & got fed up with all the
crossposting. The signal to noise ratio was appalling.
I think it's Usenet's longest running flamewar.
