Dmadiag and Boot Disk

by Jason R Smi » Mon, 03 Mar 1997 04:00:00

I have a p200-MMX system that, yes, I still use with a boot disk for
some games, simply because it is faster performance-wise.  The problem
that I am having is trying to access DMA memory while using the disk.
Apparantly the DMA will only work if I shutdown Win95 to an MS-Dos
prompt.  This is a TYAN motherboard that I am using.  I tried to run
Dmadiag from the prompt after loading the boot disk, but this caused
the machine to lock up.  I read the readme.txt for dmadiag.exe and it
appears to me that this program will only work with indy2-3d.  Is this
true, and if not, what am I doing wrong??

Thanks,

Jason

I don't know why it shouldn't work.  I am able to use it (and must since
I have a Tyan mb also) in either DOS 6.22 or DOS 7.x without a problem.
I need to use it to run NASCAR2 in DOS also.  Just make sure that you
have the supporting progs in the same directory as DMADIAG.EXE.  Also
make sure that you have the same DOS4GW.EXE that came with DMADIAG.  If
I remember correctly it will bomb if all of the support files are not in
the same directory.

For the record, I send Tyan some e-mail about this issue a month ago and
never heard a word from them.  Anyone with a Tyan motherboard with
similar problems (or want a PCI/Latency switch in their Tyan BIOS),
please send them some e-mail requestion such.  Heck get on the phone if
you have to.   The following is the reply I received from Award when I
asked why their BIOS does not seem to have a PCI/Latency switch for
HX/VX chipsets:
If you don't have this option in CMOS it is either because it is not
supported or the mfg. took this option out. We will write a source
code for a mfg. based on the board and chipset and they modify it
using a special utility. Often times certain options are taken out by
the mfg. Contact Tyan directly at 408-956-8000 to find out the
  specifics for this particular board.
