Using, say, GPL rank as a standard, how good do you really have to be before
venturing on VROC?

Rank doesn't mean much, it all depends on how much you can keep the car on
the road. Basically, you need to keep your line well, and not do a Kanaan
when you are slow.  After that, you can race online, even if you may be
slow.

I dunno, under +100 and you won't disgrace yourself.  Are you on GPLRank
btw?

However fast you are, you're always going to end up racing against people
who are a lot faster than you.  It's important not to get in people's way
when they're lapping you (if that happens), and to be sensible when you get
overtaking chances.  If you drive like a gent and have enough car control to
stay on the road, I don't think anyone will mind how slow or fast you are.

When I started in VROC-F2 I didn't even have a F2 rank (It's now 228).
It's more important to go in with the right attitude: That you want to
learn. And to take it easy until you get used to racing on-line. You
will find that nearly everybody involved is keen to help you.

Winning and racing are two separate things.  If you can race with the AI
and not crash them out you'll be fine for online.  I'm assuming you
adjusted the AI skill so you're actually in a pack most of the race.
The only thing people don't like on VROC are T1 crashers and general
out-of-control drivers.

I rarely win in my league (GPLPRC) races, but the racing is very good
even in midpack.

Yes, my ranking is in the upper 400s. Only been playing the game for about a
week, actually preferring it to Nascar 4 at which I rose to a 4-3-1-1
ranking and got stalled. GPL seems several magnitudes more challenging,
plus, unlike N4, it can be fun solo.

Not exactly what you're asking for, but if you can avoid recreating any of
the scenarios at

http://home.clara.net/jimmibo/baddriving1.htm

then you'll not only do fine, but be welcome in any race you enter.  Speed
will come with practice...

Cheers,

I believe he's referring to Tony Kanaan at Portland. Got on the grass,
then back on track, but cut right across. Took out Zanardi and Gidley.
