Currently owning a DFI P5BV3+ super-7 board with a K6-2 400 and 64MB RAM. Only
an old DIamond 2MB VRAM PCI videocard installed.
Only one reason for an upgrade: playing the upcoming GP3/4/5... series.
I always thought about buying a top-notch system with the arrival of GP3, but
now I seem to have changed my mind..
Latest reports suggest that in the third quarter, motherboards with DDR RAM
support will be released. As far as I can see, this means that anything with
100Mhz or 133Mhz SDR RAM will be obsolete at the end of 2001? Doesn't matter
whether you buy a super-expensive 1Ghz processor or not?
So in this respect it might be wiser to first get the absolute maximum out of my
current board.
Looking at the available CPU settings, it seems to support a K6-2 550 (not
explicitly printed in the manual since not available back then). There's also an
AGP slot, so I was thinking about buying one of the soon-to-be-released GeForce2
MX (about $100) which should outperform an "original" GeForce for about 1/2 of
the price.
Does this sound plausible to the HW gurus out there?
TIA,
JoH
