           & News About Upcoming Races
               December 10, 1995

RARS is the Robot Auto Racing Simulation, a competition for
programmers and an on-going challenge for practicioners of Artificial
Intelligence and real-time adaptive optimal control.  It consists of
a simulation of the physics of cars racing on a track, a graphic
display of the race, and a separate control program (robot "driver")
for each car.  All RARS software and activities are free and open to
the public.  It runs on DOS, Windows, OS/2, UNIX, Linux, and several
other platforms.  For more information e-mail to rsc...@alpha.netusa.net.

My mistake

In the previous racing session Ferdinand T. came in second when
there were four drivers.  This is enough to earn him one point
towards becoming expert.  The last announcement was in error.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is a repeat of the announcement about todays races:

December 10th, (Unlimited Division Races)
No. of races        2 novice and 2 expert each division
     Tracks:             Mosport and Suzuka
     Laps:               80 each race
     Software version:   0.64
     Surface Type:       1
     No practice, random starting order.

The drivers will be uploaded to ftp.ijs.com to a file called
driv1210.zip in 1-3 days.  These will only be the new drivers
updated this session (ramdu, Carski, Lisa).

Race Reports

The novices had the minimum 8 contestants so I didn't run
any experts with them.

The first race was suzuka.

9 cars for 80 laps.  The track was suzuka.trk.  The drivers were:
StukCar2, Sneezy, Heath4, Ralph01, Sarah, Carski, Shocker, Phill,
and Lisa.

The initial RVG seed was 28010.

   results of race 1:
starting positions:
Sarah, Lisa, StukCar2, Phill, Carski, Ralph01, Heath4, Shocker,
and Sneezy.

 1     Lisa  avg spd 85.63    80 laps  23097 damage   52 fuel   10 pts accum
 2  Ralph01  avg spd 84.9     80 laps  21121 damage   56 fuel   16 pts accum
 3    Phill  avg spd 81.11    76 laps  13254 damage   27 fuel    7 pts accum
 4   Heath4  avg spd 80.85    76 laps  22152 damage  122 fuel    7 pts accum
 5   Carski  avg spd 79.81    72 laps  30745 damage   79 fuel    4 pts accum
 6    Sarah  avg spd 82.96    64 laps  30371 damage   79 fuel    2 pts accum
 7 StukCar2  avg spd 83.21    37 laps  30251 damage  113 fuel    6 pts accum
 8   Sneezy  avg spd 79.96    12 laps  30134 damage   75 fuel    0 pts accum
 9  Shocker  avg spd 78.4      1 laps  30256 damage  143 fuel    0 pts accum

The race was fairly smooth with no weird crashes or anything.
StukCar2 crashed while trying to pass.  Sarah slowly accumulated
damage although she did have one major collision with ralph.  Carski
was in it to the very end and held on with 29000 damage for many laps.
Heath was very steady and is much improved over the older one you get at
the ftp site.  Phil is still looking for his second win to bring him
to expert status.  Lisa was very fast but is prone to crashing out
of the race (or so it seemed in some of the practice runs.)

Next was mosport.
9 cars for 80 laps.  The track was mosport.trk.  The drivers were:
StukCar2, Sneezy, Heath4, Ralph01, Sarah, Carski, Shocker, Phill,
and Lisa.

The initial RVG seed was 30584.

   results of race 1:
starting positions:
Sneezy, Ralph01, Heath4, Shocker, Lisa, Sarah, Phill, StukCar2,
and Carski.

 1  Ralph01  avg spd 87.29    80 laps  19555 damage   28 fuel   10 pts accum
 2     Lisa  avg spd 87.07    80 laps  29811 damage   27 fuel    6 pts accum
 3 StukCar2  avg spd 86.2     79 laps  16594 damage   29 fuel    4 pts accum
 4   Sneezy  avg spd 85.22    78 laps   3354 damage    4 fuel    3 pts accum
 5   Heath4  avg spd 84.44    77 laps  24393 damage  126 fuel    2 pts accum
 6    Phill  avg spd 84.02    77 laps   7321 damage   18 fuel    1 pts accum
 7   Carski  avg spd 81.91    75 laps   8442 damage    6 fuel    0 pts accum
 8    Sarah  avg spd 87.06    74 laps  36568 damage   10 fuel    0 pts accum
 9  Shocker  avg spd 82.67    44 laps  30507 damage  112 fuel    0 pts accum

Sarah and Lisa were battling it out until about lap 74.  Sarah was
faster and could catch up little by litte.  Lisa passed better
but was prone to accidents.  That is, until lap 74.  Heath went
in to fuel and Sarah ran smack dab into him.  This took Sarah
out of the race.  Lisa had the 29811 at the time (and for the
last 15 laps) and luckily survived a couple of brushes from
other cars.

Suzuka expert races.
8 cars for 80 laps.  The track was suzuka.trk.  The drivers were:
Jas, StukCar2, Ramdu, Heath4, Ralph01, Marvin, Phill, and Lisa.

The initial RVG seed was 30101.

   results of race 1:
starting positions:
Jas, Heath4, Phill, Ralph01, StukCar2, Marvin, Ramdu, and Lisa.

 1  Ralph01  avg spd 86.4     81 laps  15150 damage   55 fuel   10 pts accum
 2      Jas  avg spd 84.27    80 laps   8749 damage   38 fuel    6 pts accum
 3 StukCar2  avg spd 83.27    79 laps  18104 damage   59 fuel    4 pts accum
 4   Marvin  avg spd 79.22    59 laps  30071 damage  150 fuel    3 pts accum
 5   Heath4  avg spd 81.14    47 laps  30032 damage    0 fuel    2 pts accum
 6    Phill  avg spd 80.67    29 laps  31370 damage  134 fuel    1 pts accum
 7     Lisa  avg spd 85.86    19 laps  30146 damage   53 fuel    0 pts accum
 8    Ramdu  avg spd 81.07     1 laps  30015 damage  140 fuel    0 pts accum

Ramdu tried to barrel his way through the pack and it didn't work.  Phil
committed some form of suicide at lap 29, must be a bug somewhere.
Marvin was sure and steady but went wide while refueling.  The crash
was inconsequential as he didn't loose any positions.  Stukcar and
Jas behaved as they presumably should and were in no danger during
the race.

8 cars for 80 laps.  The track was mosport.trk.  The drivers were:
Jas, StukCar2, Ramdu, Heath4, Ralph01, Marvin, Phill, and Lisa.

The initial RVG seed was 877.

   results of race 1:
starting positions:
Heath4, Ralph01, Jas, Lisa, Phill, Ramdu, StukCar2, and Marvin.

 1  Ralph01  avg spd 90.47    81 laps  13004 damage   37 fuel   10 pts accum
 2      Jas  avg spd 88.45    80 laps  20926 damage   31 fuel    6 pts accum
 3     Lisa  avg spd 87.24    78 laps  15088 damage   32 fuel    4 pts accum
 4    Phill  avg spd 83.97    75 laps   9918 damage   23 fuel    3 pts accum
 5   Marvin  avg spd 83.55    75 laps   8481 damage   41 fuel    2 pts accum
 6 StukCar2  avg spd 86.24    75 laps  30355 damage   43 fuel    1 pts accum
 7   Heath4  avg spd 84.44    41 laps  30043 damage  128 fuel    0 pts accum
 8    Ramdu  avg spd 91.8     23 laps  30165 damage   57 fuel    0 pts accum

Having better field position, Ramdu led the race for 23 laps while
nicking the wall here and there.  One time too many.  When a car is
as much faster than the field as was Ramdu's, you have to do ALOT of
passing (and if you hit someone from behind  you take twice the damage
they do). Ramdu did good just making it that far.  Stukcar hit the wall
while trying to pass on the inside.  Phill again took the safe way out
and just had a sunday drive.  Jas did very well on this track.

Comments from Ralph

Please note we are changing to different tracks from now on.  These
are shorter tracks so that I don't sit around for hours watching the
races.  Fiorano will be tough for all stocker clones.  Adelaide is a
pretty vanilla track with lots of room for optimization.  Keep in
mind fuel usage.  Some cars only had to refuel twice on suzuka
while others had to refuel 3 times.

Good luck and see you in two weeks.
