Grand Prix movie and a wheel question.

Grand Prix was definately not filmed in 3 strip cinerama but in
65mm.True cinerama was shown on a 145 degree screen and  only single
strip cinemas  generally had a lesser curved 120 degree screen. The
effect was not as  stimulating on the lesser curved screen. Split
screen cinemaphotography has been around since the birth of cinema and
did not start with grand prix. Yes,I saw grand prix in cinerama in
Hawaii,New Zealand,new york,chicago,and san francisco.

Can't address your questions about the movie Grand Prix, but you might
want to check here for some decent driving hardware reviews:

Grand Prix movie and a wheel question.

Yes, it was in Cinerama and yes, I also saw it in that mode in the only such
theatre in Sydney, Australia, at the time of release.
By that time, however, it (Cinerama) did not employ the "split-screen" mode
of projection.  It was in one projected image, I'm pretty sure.
Up to the release of Grand Prix there had been several Cinerama
"spectaculars" shown.....mostly the "flying through the Grand Canyon" type
of thing.  One sequence involved the US Navys "Blue Angels" acrobatic team,
including launching off the deck of a carrier. That piece is firmly engraved
into my brain!

Great stuff, Cinerama, but Todd-A-O 70mm killed it off pretty quickly.  The
modern-day equivalent would be Imax.

Good point. One early memorable film to use this technique was "Napoleon" by Emil Ganz (I think that was the director), a spectacular silent film from the 20's.

Yes.  I saw it a few days after it was released at the Cinerama theater in
Hollywood (I was an avid 11-year old racing fan at the time).

It's Abel Ganz, and you're right, it is a spectacular film. I saw it in Los
Angeles back in the 80's with a live orchestra. There are sections of the
film that are in color where the film makers hand colored each individual
frame.

Hey Bo,

Cool.  But I didn't know they had indoor plumbing in Indianapolis in the 60's,
let alone a movie screen large enough to show "Grand Prix"!  ;-)   Did any
race drivers show up for the premiere, other than Pete Aron?

So did I, must have been around 1981.  The orchestra was conducted by Francis
Ford Coppola's father, Carmine (I think that was his first name).
